If a mixed breed is ok, then definitely look for rescues/shelters, even breed-specific rescues...you should never pay a "breeder" for a mixed breed dog (i.e. a mutt); these people are NOT ethical breeders and you are both setting yourself up for heartbreak and contributing to pet overpopulation.

If you are going to stick with a purebred dog, then expect to pay big bucks if you buy one from a reputable, ethical breeder, especially for a less common breed like the CDT.

Keep trying on petfinder...I am sure one, or at least a cross, will turn up at some point. What, exactly, attracts you to this breed, just out of curiosity????

Good luck...my sister just adopted one that was listed on petfinder...he is a year old and as cute as a button.

I hear getting from a breeder, $2 000 is about the going rate

Good luck and keep an open mind...you never know what your heart will fall in love with!

There is no rule stating you have to buy a dog in Canada. It just can be harder to buy from the States. You need to research breeders better, and make sure you get what you are looking for. Just because someone has a flashy website doesn't make them great, and just because some breeders choose to have no website doesn't make them bad.

I couldn't find what I wanted in an american cocker spaniel breeder within ontario. Hit Conformation shows met out of province breeders. Took a lot of searching to find a breeder I could work with and have a happy co-ownership with. In my early 20s even with a dog already who is well cared for, many breeders didn't want anything to do with me.

Ended up importing Smudge from North Carolina. His breeder and I are close, we chat on the phone like good friends, and it took long enough from the time we were introduced until his litter was ready to go home that we forged a friendship. Ideal but not always the norm.

No reason you can't look outside of Canada.

You will have to go to the airport.

Please - make sure you research the breeder well. More money spent on a puppy now usually means less money spent on a vet bill later.

Please don't buy from an online breeder who fits the following:

1) Has puppies available all the time and sometimes several different breeds.

2) Doesn't ask you any questions at all beyond your credit card number and the nearest airport.

Remember - this dog is going to be your companion for about 15 years and you are looking for a less common breed. You owe it to yourself and the dog to do the research and know which questions to ask. What is the history of the breed (what was it bred to do)? What genetic issues are common in the breed? The answers to both of these questions are paramount to YOU.

Any good breeder will take the time to get to know you. A bad one won't care. LavenderRott has great advice. You need to seriously research to pick a dog from a further away breeder.

Looking for Coton

Hi,
I am new to this forum and just saw that you were looking for a Coton. My kennel partner and I raise and breed cotons. All dogs have their health clearances (OFA patella, hips and eyes cerf) and they are conformation titled. Vi, my partner has 2 boys available. The sire was the #2 coton in the nation. He is a tri and weighs about 13lbs. The dam is the last of her bloodline out of Sweden. It is a very old bloodline dating back to some of the original dogs. She is an all white girl weighing a tiny 10lbs. Both sire and dam are Multi Champions, but the best part is their temperaments. Both are snuggle bunnies. Eventually Vi would like to take Baxter, the male and make him into a therapy dog. That is how laid back he is.

If you are interested please let me know, and I can get you in touch with Vi. The puppies are 3 weeks old, and will be available to go to their new homes the middle to the end of August. They are being trained to use a litter box for house breaking convenience.

Cheers,
Tiffany

If you notice this thread is from back in 2009. I would imagine the OP has adopted his/her dog by now.

Just curious - you don't have a waiting list of potential owners before you breed?

Thx - Marko
