Info to help a comm cat please
I have a male community cat that lives behind my house. He is about 2-1/2 years old and I trapped and neutered him about a year ago. He has become very friendly and comfortable with me and I would like to transition him into living indoors. My problem is he has always had a fairly consistent eye discharge from both eyes. It’s ranges from clear to a light brownish color. Everything I see online related to eye discharge as a symptom appears to be serious and highly contagious. I already have a cat living with me and am worried about her contracting a serious illness.
Is there any way I might be able to figure out what he may be suffering from? He is a community cat, so taking him to the vet would involve a trap, strangers and I would like to avoid that if possible. It’s not money, it’s just that a bad experience like that could affect the likelihood of him accepting a move indoors. Any helpful insight would be greatly appreciated. |

Hi, Torkjohn. I'm afraid that it would be pretty difficult to figure out what the problem is without having him seen by a vet. A vet could at least rule out the diseases that would be a danger to your current kitty. But it's almost impossible to identify what it is unless you run labs.

Hello Torkjohn:
Welcome to the forum. My thought would be to get in touch with your vet and explain what the problem is and ask if the vet makes house calls. It might be the easiest approach and less stressful for the cat. If your vet doesn't do that, would they be able to tell you of one that does do house calls or at least recommend one. As Hazel suggests it would sort of be a shot in the dark trying to diagnose what the problem is - it would be something a vet should be able to tell you. Best of luck with your endeavours.....it's nice to see someone take an extra step to try to home a feral cat. Keep us posted.

I agree with the others but depending on where you live a house call may not be a option. My vet in Hamilton, Ontario makes house calls.
Does anyone see an issue with him putting a sprinkle of Lysene on the cats food to see if it helps. I am thinking maybe his immune system is compromised. I dont think there would be any side effects from it either. What about bringing him in and keeping him confined to a room with no access to your other cat. Seeing if it clears up a bit and then hopefully you have gained his trust enough to take him in for a check up. I would want to be sure he doesnt have an upper respiratory infection or even FIV before intro to another cat

I agree with the others......but understand the reality of the situation.
You have a big heart - but like the others - I would not bring the cat into my home without a clean bill of health from a vet. Brown drippy stuff from the eyes...can be a sign of infection. A visit from a mobile vet - is an AWESOME idea. Is there is an area of your house that is separate from the rest of the house? (garage perhaps?). If so then if you could arrange for the vet to come on the day, or the day after you bring him into the house....?
