pesky tree

Does anyone know what kind of tree this is? It produces red berries or small apple like things & has purplish red leaves (see pic) and they are a nuisance - they are falling all over my newly painted deck and sidewalk and get mushed by the neighbourhood kids....yuck! Is there anything I can do to keep the tree (I like it for it's shade) but stop the berries or apples or whatever they are from coming? (that is my index finger so you have an idea for size)

Looks like Chokecherry to me. The leaves are green in the spring, but turn purplish in the fall. It's called a "Canada Red Chokecherry".

Open up one of the fruits and see if the pit looks a little like a apricot, cherry, or peach pit, but smaller. If so, it is in the Prunnus family.

THe fruits are apprently edible. But they do stain anything they touch. See if it matches these pics.

I have never seen a Chokecherry, but Rain-girl could be right,to me it looks like an ordinary Crab-Apple tree, but the leaves are a bit different.
I have one that needs constant trimming,my neighbor never trimmed his and it is now HUGE and messy.
Mine is kind of purply/green always, has pretty reddish flowers in the spring, tiny apples for the birds in the fall.
I don't think you can stop if from bearing fruit, but trimming it a lot, will stop too much berri-growth,I know it did with mine and we can still enjoy a pretty coloured tree.
So,you'll have to get up on a ladder and start trimming,or hire somebody to do it
I've got"a thing"for chopping down trees, but we are forced to cut down a wild green maple, which is nothing but a mess, mildew, bugs etc..

The leaves look the same but the berries don't look like chokecherries at all. They are bigger and grow 2 or 3 on a stem, not tons like in the picture. Could it be some other kind of cherry? Guess I'll get the hubby up there trimming before winter!!! ACKKK!!!! Thanks guys!!

It looks like a tree that my gramma has, she calls it a "crabapple" tree. The only thing that I know about it is that the deer love it.

it's a crabapple. It has pink flowers in the spring right?

you can't get rid of the fruits unless you stop pollenation which would be impossible.

No flowers at all! Just these pesky berries!! They do look like mini apples, or enlarged hard cherries.....

Crabapple for sure

I am sure it's a crabapple tree. As with many trees, there are more than one type. Flowers will B in the spring. Best idea for making it not fruit....well.... U will need to spray a dormant spray on the flowers in spring to kill some of the flowers and lessen the production of berries. That is NOT good for the tree mind you. You can get "inside" the tree canopy and cut out as many smaller branches to open it up and make what is there stronger...be sure to NEVER remove more than 1/4 of the tree at any given season or you risk killing the tree.
Hope that helps! I'm an avid gardener/Lanndscaper by trade and I also work in a greenhouse!

Yeah, you're totally right....we didn't move in until July 1 so I probably missed the flowers! And the boys that lived here before didn't take care of the yard at all, so I'm trying to mend it as best I can...and I'm soooooo not good at it! I don't know what to do or where to start! I guess we'll live with the apples for now, and maybe cut the whole thing down next spring, although I like the shade & privacy it gives us on our deck!

What kind of crabapple tree gives such tiny apples?

it's not a real apple. Don't eat them they don't taste good

Apples and crabapples are in the rose family, Rosaceae, in the genus Malus. Crabapples are differentiated from apples based on fruit size. If fruit is two inches in diameter or less, it is termed a crabapple. If the fruit is larger than two inches, it is classified as an apple.

I was curious so I looked around a bit, and found a tree called, a purple-leaf cherry plum. It took a lot of sifting, it was hard to find any up close pics of the fruit, but it was called "Prunus cerasifera - 'Thundercloud' " the purple-leaf variety, maybe you'll have better luck finding a picture that matches. This link has a link that shows an up close of the leaves and the fruit when it's fully developed and partially eaten by a squirrel or something. Good luck, she seems to be annoyed by the fruit too, and she planted it. Good luck.

We trim our crabapple to keep it small by trimming the shoots as they grow all summer.
Here's a pic in one of my small perrenial gardens, you don't see much of it though..

Can you take your picture of the tree and go to the local garden centre? A specialized centre where that's all they do, not the ones that pop up every spring attached to home hardware and grocery stores.

I've done that before with mystery trees, shrubs and flowers. Usually the folks in the centre are a great help, they should be able to identify it for you and maybe offer you options to reduce the berries.

Plus, if they have no way to stop the berries, they'll be able to sell you a non-fruit bearing tree to fill the hole once you get rid of that one

I also think its a crabapple. we have one in the back yard that drops berries all summer too. it has a few still on there now although they are all soft, mushy and wrinkled now. reddish leaves and pink flowers.
