Trying to volunteer for SPCA
hello everyone.. so in case some of you guys don't know, i don't own any pets. i would love to own a dog one day, but i just don't have the time to do it at the moment.
so i decided to volunteer for the SPCA. i submitted an application form online , i checked my email within the week like the website suggests, but never got a reply back. i thought that maybe i accidently deleted their email cuz it might of went to junk, so i emailed them, but still haven't heard anything. then i reapplied like 5 days ago, but still haven't heard anything. my question is, am i just not the right applicant? i don't think so though, i want to dedicate some time for dog walking. has this happened to anyone else? how exactly does the SPCA run?? if i still don't hear anything in a few days, i'm gonna call them. but i'm afraid that they're gonna tell me that they only communicate through email and aren't much help kinda thing. |

You might try some rescues in the area...they need volunteers as well and are usually very happy to have the help.

Can you recommend some reputable websites or shelters. I'm new to this. What is the difference between the two. Thanks

How old are you? If you are under the age of 18, this might play a factor. Shelters are always busy, and at this time of year shelters are even more busier.
I would go in and hand in my application. Speak with the people at the front desk. Also, you should try and interact with the cats/small animals as well. They seem to get forgotten when people want to volunteer. and Shelters are very happy to have volunteers and the more them better. Without volunteers, alot of shelters would not run. ACO22 |

As a former BC SPCA employee, I do know that most people apply to walk dogs. Rarely to you get people willing to clean in the AM (for all animals). Most people just want to play and have fun (after all, cleaning up poop isn't all that fun, lol). You should call and find out the regulations for volunteering (I do believe that anyone under 16 or 18 is not allowed due to insurance issues). Also if there are plenty of dog walking volunteers already, you may not get a call/email back that quickly. If you are quite serious about volunteering, offer to do some of the icky jobs that others don't want to do. It shows you are serious about the care of animals, and don't mind a bit of hard work Besides, if you eventually have a dog of your own, you will have to clean up after it, so might as well get a system going for yourself now (I worked cats in the AM and dogs in afternoon, and all animals in PM - now with my critters, feeding and cleaning is a breeze since I have a system lol).

thanks for all your suggestions. i will look at other places besides the spca. they are the only place i know of and it's close to my place.
it can't be that i'm underage, cuz i'm 27! i applied for dog walking because i want to learn how to handle dogs and learn about their behavior so that when i do get a dog one day, i will know what to do. |

vapour, a similar thing happened to me. I applied to volunteer for a local cat rescue, when I saw on their site that they were in "desperate" need of adoption screeners. It took them 3 weeks to e-mail me back and let me know more about the position, and after reading through the material they sent me I told them I still wanted to do it. So they said someone would call me to discuss it in more detail and provide some training, and I never heard back. That was 2 months ago.
I don't know about shelters, but I hear over and over again that rescues are extremely busy - and most people involved in rescue are doing so during their free time, before/after their regular job. So it can take quite a while to hear back from people. Just give it some time, and apply to a few other rescues/shelters in the meantime. I'm sure there are many who need help and you'll find a placement soon! |

You may want to contact the shelter and speak with the person in charge of the volunteer program. Which SPCA is it?

Yup if you want to dogwalk (which is very rewarding; i've been doing it for almost 3 years at the MTL. SPCA) call the SPCA and try to find out who is in charge of the program. If you can't get a hold of anyone just go there and ask a few people, maybe some dogwalkers will already be there walking.
At least in MTL, there is a large turnover of volunteers so when you get to the right person, they'll likely be very happy you did.

Hello
I volunteer at both the Vancouver Animal Control Shelter and the SPCA. Currently the Vancouver SPCA branch manager is away and they are kind of understaffed at the moment. Everyone is super busy. We are trying to organise another dog walking workshop for mid July. The proper channel to volunteer at the Vancouver SPCA is to first submit an application online. Sometimes, it will take weeks even months before they contact you. Since there is often time a back log of applicants that they work through. It took me four months before I finally got to walk my first dog at the City Pound from when I applied. If you want it bad enough, you will get it. Summer time, we often have enough volunteers, it is Winter time when we really hurt. If you have time, on Monday 6th of July. You are more than welcome to walk with me. Just PM me and we can work something out. This is my thread on my volunteering experience at the Vancouver SPCA. http://www.pets.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=58467

Wow Scuba, what an awesome contact! Pets.ca is awesome! Good luck! It is awesome you want to do something for these animals, anyone is who willing to take the time out of their day to commit to these animals is A O.K. in my books!
I also think it would be awesome if you offered to help with the other jobs, lots of people want to do the 'fun' stuff, but showing that you are commited to anything to help the animals would help you get your foot further in the door, and would surely help you to be a walker. again, Good luck! |
