I love that blanket flower. So pretty. I love lavendar too, but have never had any luck keeping it alive.

The blanket flowers almost look like Zinnia's? They are so pretty 14+ Are they annual or perennial?

klmccallum the Blanket Flower is indeed a perennial. There are other types, like almost all red/maroon and different variations of color. Each is unique!

I agree, 14+ should write a book! A much better gardener than me.

Blanket flowers (Gaillardia) are a short lived perennial but they self seed so well that you are never without tons of them. I think I have them in all but one of my beds. I love them just because they seem to wake up a bed with their colour.

I quite often go by and pinch off a leaf just so I can smell the lemony smell. It makes a wonderfully relaxing tea too.

Ummm, Ceara, I will leave the book writing to you. Your gardens are wonderful. In fact I think everyone's gardens are unique and show the owners' personalities. I love looking at all the pics that are posted.

14+ just beautiful!!

I use to grow blanket flowers, starting them from seeds, like most of my flowers. But I lost them from contractor's big feet. I forgot how much they do brighten up a bed! Next year I'm going to grow some. I'm so glad u posted that pic!

I'm afraid hazel's moldy thumb has worked its 'magic' on the seed you sent me :sad: Looks like only a few of the cosmos are going to survive... No malva...no campion...no coreopsis! Even the ones I started ahead of time.

What's your secret?

Hazel - Just leave them for next year. You never know. Sometimes the seeds just like a year to "settle in". The campion is famous for that. Malva - weird. I never had any come back this year either and it was supposed to be a perennial. The cosmos - all you need is a few. They will selfseed and in a few years you may be cursing me. Coreopsis is picky too. They seem to like no attention and they do well.

Well, maybe all isn't lost then. Certainly I can give them 'no attention' very well, since at this point I can't even see them!

I'm hoping the cosmos, at least, does get big enough to bloom and reseed--right now the seedlings are only about an inch-and-a-half high....but at least I know they sprouted!!

Cosmos is a late season flower. Right now mine are only about 4 or 5 inches tall and they started before yours did. They can flower when they are tiny but usually wait till they are at least a foot. Mine get to be between 4 and 5 feet tall by the time they are done.

Me me! I was eyeballing that Coreopsis too.

Hazel I have some mixed named Malva types that I got in a trade and I'll save some seed for you. They are making buds now. I can't wait to see how they do because I've never grown them before. I started them in March indoors.

We're finally getting some sun after almost two weeks of rain and dark clouds.

Yes there really isn't a need to buy lots of types of flowers because so many gardeners will save seed to freely share with others. I don't think people realize just how much gardening stuff you can get for free from places like GardenWeb and some forums. But it takes time corresponding with folks.

Don't worry about the Cosmos. When they get up a bit higher, pinch off the very top section and then it will send up two shoots, get bushy and give you more blooms! I saw on a gardening show last year, they did a trial on Cosmos. One bed was dead headed and the other was not. They wanted to see if dead heading made any difference in performance. And it didn't. haha
