An upsetting day in our little Oasis..

A bad day period!!
First thing I saw when I woke up,a large dead Possum right in front of our houseit was a male,so no babies in the pouch.

Next,I think I told you the empty house next door have raccoons in the roof..
well, the new owner is replacing the roof.
He knows there are Raccoons,I told him,but hestill decided to just put the new roof on.
This morning,a baby tried desperatly to get in,but they shooed him away and he is now in my hedge.
I called the Oakville Humane Society,a young man, whom I know from before came,he picked up the Possum, then he checked out the baby and decided to leave it in case mom comes for him,if he's still there tomorrow he'll pick it up.

He talked to the people, told them it's animal cruelty if they block the way out for the Raccoons,so they checked the attic and said there was no Raccoons there,I hope they are right, but I have a feeling they did not check good enough, the one guy who checked,is terrified of coons.
We'll see...tomorrow.

Do you think he's too little to survive on his own, chico? I hope his mom comes back for him! Maybe she's just laying low till it gets dark

Oh Chico, I am so sorry you have to go through this.

But better you than someone who does not care. At least the little darling has a guardian angel looking out for him

Momma comes tonight.

We had a really bad thunder-storm last night,I thought about that little guy out there alone.
The young man from HS,estimated the little one probably needs another month to be selfsufficient.
There are signs that a Raccoon was here last night,I am hoping it was mom
I will go out and look for him,if he's still there I'll call HS....I'll let you know..

I hope she came for him!

I thought of him last night. There was a huge raccoon cleaning up under the platform feeders--I think she's got kits somewhere nearby, too, so I let her finish up before bringing in the feeders.

Thank goodness for the HS.

But it makes you wonder where the mom is. I would have thought she would have come for him if she could.

I am still waiting for them, but I have a feeling the mom and the rest of the babies are trapped,I am going to ask HS to check thorougly from the Attic..they've(not the babies) been there since last fall,so I am sure they are
hunkered down securily.

Poor little guy. Can the HS check the attic without the owner's permission?

Maybe I misunderstood but are you staying there is a possibility the roofers sealed racoons IN the attic? Are they crazy? Racoons, even one, can wreck their attic. If one dies in there it will STINK in the heat.

OK, it's sad, but not everyone gives two hoots for animals. Don't they care about the house though? Could you present that to them as an argument? Surely if they are only guys doing a job for someone else it is still incumbent on them to make sure the attic is clear.

Gosh, I'd think if a family of racoons has been there for some time the place would smell from faeces and urine already. Sure did in a family member's house. Urine was staining the ceiling.

had to check and see what was up.... was thinking about the little guy last night too chico, had bad storms here too. Hopefully the owners let the HS guy get up there to look properly, I'd just hate to think of a whole family trapped up there! I'll check back after work to see how you made out today!

I am still waiting, the little guy has been without any food for more than 30 hours,I think hubs and I will try to get him down ourselves, put him in a cat-carrier,give him some bread soaked in milk, until HS gets here.
I am really upset over this whole situation,I broke down in tears...

not milk chico, if anything, try feeding him pedialyte....is he young enough to still be suckling from his mom?

In an emergency, a homemade solution can be made by mixing: ½ teaspoon salt + ½ tablespoon of sugar + 2 cups of water – warm slightly to dissolve sugar and salt. better if the water was boiled first

Melinda,I did not need too, right after I was on here,HS came.
The little guy put up a real fight,he looked to be maybe 2 months old.

This was not the same young man as yesterday, this one would not even talk to my neighbor about the possibility there might be a whole family in the roof.
I think it's a surety there are more where this baby came from, but I suppose that is up to the owner to call Wild-Life services,I'll keep an eye on things.

I talked to the owner and he'll be here late tonight to listen for noises, then will see what happens, hopefully the mom will be able to dig herself through again
At least this baby is safe,HS does not kill them, they go to a wildlife sanctuary.

chico, at two months it is possible the mother was in the process of moving them further out, (because of the construction of the new roof), this baby might have been the last to be moved, like squirrels they move them in a two step deal, first step is to take each one down seperately and "stash" them in a bush etc, when all are in the pile, she then again, takes one at a time to where ever it is she chose for her new "home", he might have been the last and because of the noise she didn't return.
