Spring garden

No gardening for me for a little while. I was helping a farmer friend 'mark' our lambs and a big ewe chose to stage an escape from the shed and knocked us both for 6. So, query a fracture in my upper arm maybe, a very bad lower back, and maybe a bruised kidney. Taking it easy to see whether I need to make a Dr's appointment.
Anyway, for today ....

This first iris has rather beautifully changed colour, the falls going from purple to this reddish colour.

I have a Dr's appointment for Monday, Hazel.

Here is yet another iris. It has a rather brassy shine to the top petals in certain lights.
Next is the beautiful 'Tradescent'.
Finally 'Ebb Tide', which was on my Wish list the minute I saw it.

I went shopping for irises yesterday and came home with 10, unfortunately I didn't get photo's of all of them. Very nice lady who was selling them, she also gave me cuttings of half a dozen different pelargoniums. The first is a bit out of shape but at least shows the colour.

Hmmm, only have photo's of 8 of them. The third photo here is one I already had. It will make it interesting when they flower next year because I've forgotten the colours of the other two.

Doc reckons the arm is more likely to be tendons or ligaments, so maybe I can expect improvement after 10 days, but he sent me off for x rays, with a referral to a specialist, for my very arthritic right knee instead. Hope it just means cleaning some bits out and not a knee replacement.
Irises can be as beautiful as orchids I think but of the 3 I think roses are the best value perhaps with their repeat flowering. Oh, a good friend came out and mowed my house yard for me and he was telling us of a woman in town who has a lot of irises. I might just introduce myself and see if she'd like to swap some rhizomes. (I always knew they would be another gardening addiction. LOL. )

Of the three, I've never tried orchids cuz I'd hate to kill anything so beautiful and delicate, roses die the minute I get my moldy fingers on them --but irises will miraculously bloom for me!! About the only cultivated plants I have any luck with are daylilies and irises. The natives do really well here, though!

Glad to hear your arm isn't broken!! Hope the tendons/ligaments heal quickly. And the knee doesn't need replacing Will you need physical therapy for the arm?

I hope not. It was a good thing our friend did the mowing because I was must so tempted to give it a go. I would have regretted it. The knee is a legacy of running too many triangles with my dogs in the ring, always in one direction.
I'm pleased you can grow daylilies, they're beautiful, aren't they? Oh, I smile whenever I think of this, I have my first Hippeastrum flower coming. I sort of put it in with things I thought I'd never succeed with, like Boronia and Daphne, or Russell Lupins. I think snails ate all my Lupin seedlings one year. Or slugs maybe?

Well, I woke up in agony on Sunday, all the pain concentrated on the area where I had thought maybe I had a fracture, so I went to the ER and had it x rayed. Apparently my arthritis (osteoporosis?) is so bad the Dr couldn't see if there was a fine fracture or not but regardless she was treating it as one, so a pressure bandage for a couple of weeks, and in a sling for a month. I can tell you now, that won't last. The sling hurts my neck and there are too many things you must have both hands for.
Thought I'd show you all a snap I took at the latest garden I visited. This garden belongs to a friend of the lady I bought my 10 new irises from. The first lady was so impressed by the fact that my camera captured the true colour of the blooms that she told the second one, who phoned me to ask about the camera ,then I volunteered to go and take photo's for her. She actually intends to buy the same camera I think. She had 5 big iris beds like this one. The second photo is the garden in town I went to inspect, lovely irises again, including this one with what they called horns. See how the beard lifts off the falls. Most unusual.

Sorry to hear about your arm, though. I hear ya about the sling. They're just so inconvenient--but you're supposed to be resting your arm, so wear it longer than you think you can! Promise? It's good for what ails you.

There wasn't time the other day for me to make a list of the irises I'd like to buy, so chances are I'll be going back down next Thursday, Hazel. They can be dug any time before next Spring, I won't hassle her to get them dug up now.
It can be a relief to stick my arm in a sling at times, but if the arthritis is so bad in my arm, it must be shocking in the neck, especially after falling and colliding head first with a wall. But, I shall try and be good. You know how a nurse/Dr will ask you to grip their hands and squeeze? I'd have sworn I could do that evenly, but they did say my grip with the left hand was weaker.

I knew I shouldn't visit the Plant Nursery today. I have a weakness for striped roses, (like this first one I already had, Soaring Spirits,) and they had the Delbard rose in, Grimaldi. The friend I was with also bought Grimaldi for her garden. It was a fun afternoon, visiting an iris garden and putting in a (big) order for next Spring, then looking at two Nurseries. The first nursery had beautiful roses but too expensive.

Beautiful, GF! I don't believe I've ever seen a striped rose in person. Are they like the striped tulips--is the mottling caused by some sort of rose virus?

Goldfields, your iris plants are beautiful. You must have every color there is, and yes, your camera does take very good shots of the flowers. I'm so jealous, I just pulled out the geraniums which were the last of my flowers to finally get hit by frost. Its going to be a long winter, keep sending the pictures.

I don't know the answer to that, Hazel. I might ask an expert. I have the beautiful striped rose, Fourth of July, flowering now and just love it. I also fluked getting another striped one, it was supposed to be a red rose and instead came out pink and white. The third rose will be the divine Sharifa Asma. It has the most sensational fragrance.
lindapalm, I don't have much of a garden this year but we'll see what I can find to cheer you up over the cold months. I will have a nice iris collection next year when I get those I've ordered(25 ) but knowing my luck we'll go back to normal weather conditions then and I won't have much success with them. It would be tough gardening where you are if you have to pull geraniums out. Ours just thrive all year round.

Time for a change and I'm so pleased to be able to show the first photo. This is the first Hippeastrum I have ever had flower. Took a lot of shifting it around over the past year or more, seeing the bulb didn't get too wet, or too hot etc..
The second photo is a Cosmos named Double Click Rose, and the third a Penstemon, such elegant flowers.

Well, to cheer you up, here are some of the irises I have ordered for next season. The first is named Decadence, the other two I don't know, but Cheryl will have then named when I get them.

Ya, those last three are my faves--if I had to narrow it down to one, I couldn't, but I could probably pare it down to the 1st and 3rd in that last set.
