Small Dog vs Large Dog?
Eventually, when we find our larger place, this summer coming hopefully. I want to get another dog. I've sort of been thinking of something smallish. But then it seems that they all are hard to house train. Bayley was pretty much trained by the time she was 14 weeks, little bit of submissive piddling and when she'd get excited but that didn't last long and she never pooped in the house at all. So, I'm not experienced with harder to train dogs. Even my first pup was trained in about 2 weeks after I got her. Are all small dogs hard to train? Is it the breed or the people? I looked after a neighbours small dog last year for a few days and other than doing a bit or marking (not really appreciated!) in the house, he was good after the first day. Not sure how old he is though. Bayley certainly seemed to like having him around. Not sure what kind if I was to get one, but it would likely be from Petfinder.

From my experience, small dogs are harder to train. I have two and I still pick up accidents..... I never ever had issues with my large dogs.

Anybody know why that is? I live in Saskatchewan, so maybe I should stick to bigger dogs! I want a dog that can handle going for walks when it's cold and it seems like most small dogs freeze up when it gets cold. Are there any small breeds that can handle Canadian prairie winters? Not that this dog would live outside but going for walks and stuff like playing outside.

Hey Pattymac,,,i've had both large and small dogs and personally can't say i've ever really noticed a huge difference in housebreaking. At the moment i have a cocker/terrier a golden retriever and a great pyrenees pup and they all pretty much were clean in the house by 2-3 weeks,,i actually had more problem with the golden than the others. Just like everything else it depends on the dog and paying attention. Oh and our little guy is outside just as long as the other two most times.

I'd think the smaller dogs have smaller bladders and can't last as long without piddling.
But I had a small dog who deliberately did his business in the house as some kind of power thing...or something. Scruffy's mid-size and he's great. |

Small or big breeds , like with any dogs , you have to research the breed. I have all sizes. My little one is a Pom and doesn't mind the cold weather (can't say the same for my great dane , it all has to due with fur). And he loves when we get a big dump of snow ! It took a while to house train him but , I think it has to do with the fact that he was rehomed so many times in the first year of his life. Now , he clean and listen as good as the other bigger dogs.

I have had a multitude of big and small dogs while fostering. I have had more difficulty with the smaller ones however.
Now - for the twist. My min pin was not clean for the longest time. Once I moved into a home with access to a backyard, things have changed drastically. She is now clean. So I must wonder if I was the problem...my answer will have to be yes. I think that environment plays a huge roll. |

BM , I noticed Jack has to go not long after meals , while the other dogs wait , I think small dogs digest faster maybe ?

You and I have XXX small dogs. It could be. I am really not sure but Julia asks for the door frequently. The back yard however has made a huge difference for us. I never would have thought it but based on her being clean I am a believer.

thanks guys! It will probably take me some time to find another dog. Bayley isn't always the easiest to get along with. She hates most puppies until they're at least 6 months old. So will probably go with an older dog....maybe a year or two.

It seems above 20lbs reduces most of the issues (although I have heard people complain about all size dogs and housebreaking). My dachshund isn't too bad, but on occasion he will have to poop during the night, and has a nervous bladder when it comes to being left alone...
We have no yard so he has to be walked for his potty breaks, of course when it is -30 it is hard sometimes to convince him to stay out long enough to toilet properly. We have had some luck with command training for pee, if we don't feel he's peed enough we can now force him to pee in front of the door before going inside. |

Oh yes I have trained my little dog to pee on command, it helps...
If I were really really active I would look at a Border Collie or even Shepherd for exercise. My little dogs don't like the cold either however my Boston can't take the extreme heat. Watch for short nosed dogs they are sensitive to extreme exercise. |

I would just browse local petfinder or shelters until something catches your eye. Puppy season is also comming and the shelters should have lot's of mystery puppies that might be suiting

I've only had my shelties, and a very small Chihuahua, and didn't find them any harder to toilet train than my cattle dogs, or that they need to toilet any more frequently than them. If you have a yard, as BenMax does, you should be fine. In nature animals will toilet as far from their 'den' as they can. I see that trait in mine, if they can get right out to the orchard they're happy, they have a 'poop fest". LOL.

How about rescuing an adult small breed that is already house trained?

I will likely go the rescue route...hehe..any dog coming in here will have challenges! Nino is bigger and heavier than alot of small dogs and doesn't take any caca! When I dog sat, the pup learned pretty quick not to mess with the kitties. He was actually quite a cute little poop. Needed a good grooming and didn't really know much but that wasn't his fault. I think he was a shih tzu mix.
