How to make a cat tree?

After a long time of searching for reasonably priced cat trees I have finally given up. I'm now resorting to making a cat tree instead of paying for a $315 cat tree from petland. But I have no idea how to start. I'm looking to build a tree about 6ft tree with ledges and a sturdy support covered in carpet. Could anyone provide me with some tips or guildlines when it comes to making home made cat trees?

PS I don't know where you live but we are just a little outside Montreal and we bought our 5 ft cat tree for 100 $... Also, if you go to cat shows, some exhibitors sometimes sell their remaning stock for a lot less at the end of the weekend since they don't feel like reloading everything in the van...

You could try Ebay for a kitty tree. My husband and I built our first cat tree for our girls, but then this Christmas when we wanted to get them a new one, we checked Ebay first. We ended up getting one for 80 dollars (that was including shipping...the actual tree was only like 40 dollars), and it's a really nice one too, brand new. If you decide to make one, there was a thread posted here awhile ago with instructions for building a tree. If you do a search of the forum, you should be able to find it. Good luck!

oh no! I wish I didn't see this thread!......better yet my downstairs neighbour wishes I didn't see it.

I feel like challenging myself to a kitty tree project. But my apartment's so small I don't know where it would fit. *cries* my kitties are so deprived!

Happycats, thank's for bringing up those instructions again, the tree my hubby originally built is ready to be retired. We have tons of leftover wood to build a new one,but we'll be using more Sisal-Rope this time around.
I wanted to buy the cats a tall one for Christmas, but at $300+ hubby rather build another one.
