Dog training in the Markham area - Life's Ruff and Canine Campus?
I'm looking to enrol my 1.5 year old chihuahua mix into a beginner class. I got her from a dog rescue and so far, I've taught her a few things from helpful dog training books I've read and she's got most of the commands down (though she doesn't do a reliable sit-stay/stay) but she's also not very socialized. Big fan of barking at people on our walks.
So I'd like to take her to some lessons mostly so that she can meet new people/dogs and HOPEFULLY get some socialization (even though, yes I know, I already missed the "peak" time for socialization). Heard some bad things about Petsmart from here and while the training itself I think I can do via books on my own, I think the training environment would be good for my dog. But I also heard about 2 dog training places nearby me that I can't really find any reviews on, anywhere. This is a shot in the dark but has anyone tried: http://www.lifesruff.ca/ or http://www.caninecampus.ca/ Or any suggestions for places in the Markham area? |

I see the dogs out being walked in groups from both of these places while out and about during the day but unfortunately cannot offer any opinions on either as I am a cat lady!
Even though I do not have a dog, I too have not heard the greatest things about PetSmart training - not specifically the store itself, just the type of classes that are being done in the store here. I would suggest you call your vet or even a couple of different vets in the area and get their recomendations. They are sure to be in the know about which place provides the best training and have likely seen the results in their offices. Good Luck.

Yeah I'm guessing the closest Petsmart for you too is the one by Woodbine and Hwy 7, nearby the Chapters and Home Depot? I went there a few times and the trainer there is an 18 year old kid so while I'm not "ageist", I do wonder how good of a trainer he can really be. |

Judging from the websites alone, both places look pretty good. Your best bet would be to sit in on a puppy class and on a beginner training class to see which you're most comfortable with and which you think you and your pup will have most fun in while learning at the same time (make sure that you'll be attending classes where you'll have the same instructor). Compare the techniques, the size of classes, the attention each pup/family gets, the ease of understanding the individual instructors, their levels of patience, etc.
Looking forward to hearing how it goes .

not a fan of campus canine
keep in mind, i need a doggy daycare that suits my crazy, rushed, mornings. so when i call to register for a trial day, i always tell them that i'm pretty much on my own in mornings as my husband works very early - and that i have to drop my child off at school before heading to work. i have to be in work by 8:30am. so i'm looking for places where i can drop my pup off easily, hassle free.
well, the first day hobz was there, he had a poop accident inside. not too surprising. he's 5 months, was a bit nervous and unsettled. i learned about this when i called in around 10am to ask them a question and i got this big lecture that i should have let him go on this teeny-bitty lawn that's not anywhere close to their entrance (of which i would have to bring my 6 year old out with me - can't just leave a child in a car - have him do his business, clean up after him where there is no were to dispose of his waste, then walk both him and my daughter to the side of the very industrial building to get him into daycare... not to mention it's a busy area so he's totally distracted and not wanting to potty at all. i tried to explain to her that he normally does not go until close to noon again (he goes first thing in the morning) and she lectured me more about having to train him. i said 'okay' and 'thank-you'. i picked him up that day. and never returned. we're now just 2 min. away from the markham location of canine campus at dogeden. MUCH BETTER! not much more expensive either. having said that - both places are good as far as making sure your dog has fun and exerts their energy so that when you pick him/her up, they will be pretty pooped. and this was just the issue with that morning employee. when i picked him up, the young lady at canine campus was much better. still... it's a business. for $30 a day, i didn't think it was cool of them to expect me to do the leg-work for what they are suppose to do themselves. |
