Dog penis problem?

My english springer spaniel is 13yrs of age but acts 2. He is not castrated, fathered pups years ago and when younger did have a habit of trying to mount everything (does not do this now).A mth ago whilst out walking his penis was visible all the time (completely erect) although he was not showing any signs of smelling a bitch on heat. On examination we found 2 firm swellings at the base of his penis. He was not in pain and ate/drank as normal - same as his bodily functions. He also had a dirty brown discharge. The vet had never seen anything like it before. We believed he had picked up an infection whilst walking and he was prescribed antibiotics. The vet said the swellings were those present when mating, but they appeared to have stuck. Since then, it's still the same situation. Any ideas? The vet suggests castration but I'm loathe to do this at Amos' age (that's my dog's name)

It sounds like your dog may have both priapism and paraphimosis. If I am understanding this correctly - the penis is extruded from the prepuce (paraphimosis) and the bulbous glands of the penis (the two firm swelling where the dogs 'lock') are also engorged (priapism). Correct? The 'erect' status is not the same with people - dogs have a actual bone within the penis which keeps it erect and firm at all times. It is called the os penis.

In a 13 year old dog with what you are describing, my first concern would be prostatic disease. Has your vet performed a rectal examination? Is the prostate enlarged?

I would recommend blood and urine testing and an abdominal ultrasound. I would be concerned that this might become something more serious and may indicate underlying disease like prostatic disease or a hormonal disorder.

Neutering (surgical castration) may be helpful but it depends upon what the underlying cause is. Most forms of prostatic disease will be benefited from castration. However we need to know that 1) this is or is not the cause and we also want to make sure that 2) there is not a tumor or malignancy present.

Please let us know how he does or if you get more information.

Sorry for the delay in replying.

Our other dog Seth passed away 10 days ago (posted on the rainbow bridge thread)so it has been a traumatic few days for us.
After visiting the vet he has confirmed that it could be a problem with
Amos's prostrate. First thing was to have him chemically castrated and he is now on a course of antibiotics for two weeks. We will then assess the situation. Thanks for the reply it looks as though you were spot on.

thank you
Jayne and John
