Nice shots, ownedbycats!!! Love the ones of the Red-winged BB flying over the water with the reflections below!
And holy catz, Goldfields! Not sure I'd want to get that close to a Long-Billed Corella! Aptly named! Chris, are the nuthatch pics better now?

Ownedbycats Very neat pics, the reflection on the water of the Redwing .....I love the pic of the Sparrow, her/his wings look just like fans. Hazel thankyou ....in the last pic of the Nuthatch, the expression on the face is as if something besides a food cache is in there. |

Three more pics from today...
I finally got a couple of shots of Mama White-breasted Nuthatch. She's not quite through her molt, so her feathers look a bit patchy on her head. You can tell this is the fem because her hood is a medium gray instead of deep charcoal (the nuthatch checking out the oak cavity is a male). And a nice closeup of a fox sparrow from the blind!

That red wing blackbird and your cardinals are so beautiful, I wish we had them here.
Chris21711, New South Wales is next door to Victoria, but a long way from us. The long bill corella is from the Cockatoo family actually and they get up to all sorts of mischief. They take roofnails out, they wreck gardens, ditto for window frames. I tend to think of them as ratbag birds seeing they seem to be all over the sky in big flocks , screeching for no real reason. When they congregate along the river in town, which they must do for water now that a new pipeline means no dams are being filled, the noise they make would be deafening. They'd be waking everyone at dawn, and in the evening they wouldn't be able to hear themselves think. |

So Goldfields am I right in understanding you don't know my Aunt and Cousin ....I think your Long Billed Corellas are mighty fine looking birds they are getting a bad rap

On my way into town this morning on a rural gravel road I slowed way down when a flicker decided to veer in front of the car. About the same time, 20 or so juncos and a handful of fox sparrows flushed from just off the gravel, so I slowed down even more to gawk. And suddenly, more than 200 juncos and dozens of fox sparrows went up from the ditches on either side!
For a few seconds, we all traveled together and I was just another species in a mixed flock migrating north Pretty cool!!!

Pepe finished my Bluebird House on the weekend, now the wait to see if a BB or anyone for that matter likes it enough to set up house
He made it to specs that I gave him, that way he holds no blame if it is considered undesirable I saw my first Robins of the season, yay, a tad late imo but I aint b*tching....I also saw for the very first time in real a Purple Finch, just 1 but it's better than none. Quote:

That's a beautiful box, Chris! Any bluebird or tree swallow or wren or chickadee would love a house like that! Pepe is a good man!

This weeks newbie, Mr Song Sparrow!
He was hiding in the pines and I thought I wouldn't get a picture of him, but then he obligingly flitted out almost at my feet!

The fox sparrow was very entertaining last week.
Even showed off his lovely hood...

Here another doing the typical fox sparrow two-legged hop-scratch.
I got a lovely shot from the back--normally when you see these guys, they look russet, but when you see them sitting still close by, all that gray magically appears.

The male goldfinches are still looking a little frowzy from their molt but are well on their way to golden glory.
The dark-eyed juncos are still hanging around, too.

Mama white-breasted nuthatch is also still molting (note the primary feather about to come off the wing).
She's still dang cute, though!

Honest Hazel, your pics knock the socks off of some bird photographers....the amount of feathering detail they show is so good ....
My Goldfinches are coming along nicely with their colouring, some more than others...I don't seem to have the usual influx of bossy Grackles this year which is good, I like to see them but not in droves....one the other day pecked at one of my Chippies Hopefully the birdhouse will attract what it is intended for, anyone is welcome but there are 4 other houses in the yard which have been occupied by House Wrens and one of them has been housing Tree Swallows for the last 10 years or so. I could open MMM's links but it is 26MB....I would be here until the day after tomorrow with that one |

Sorry Hazel...
With the second link scroll down until your see "Ideas (highlights)" then scroll down to the birdy thjing. Or this might work... http://www.cbc.ca/podcasting/pastpodcasts.html#ref14 Chris is there anything I can do to technically send it to you in a format that work on your dial-up? |

Nope, doesn't work and that's weird. It flips to the right section then flips back.

I was driving down the road to do some grocery shopping today and I stopped short when I saw a few birdies around. I was going to turn around and grab my camera but figured they would still be there when I came back. Hubby was going out when I made it back so I made him go take pics of these winged fellas. He didn't know there was a closeup button on the camera.
I wish I would have done it earlier. I stopped counting at 40 in the lone tree alone. I will check to see if they are still around tomorrow. There was a dead raccoon in the ditch they were feeding on.

Around here they are simply called Turkey Vultures. I'm sure hazel can put their right name on them.
And if you keep on going down that road you would get to my place in around two minutes.

Black with bald, red head? We call 'em Turkey Vultures, too, 14+.
I've seen a few pics in the past few days of large gatherings of TVs...but I've never seen a big flock in person. The most I've ever seen at once was about 5 or 6 Evidently the social pariahs hang out at hazel's

Did I mention how much I love this thread ? Your pics and descriptions are all so fabulous! 14+, the third photo in your first post, ahhhh, I just want to build a cabin nearby and look at that view all day, every day .
I haven't had much time to check out new visitors here but the Robins are awfully brave . They land within feet of the dogs in the yard but, thankfully, are able to escape easily when a chase is on . Penny's gotten really good about freezing in one spot until the Robins get closer so we're working exceptionally hard on the "leave it" and distractions lately .

We've had as many as 6 dogs all pointing the same robin, LP! To date, the robins have always managed to escape the final rush!

Darn! Wish I woulda' known!! The 33 acre place next door sold last year. Colonial style house. 5 bedrooms, 5 baths, library, etc. A barn and a couple of large sheds. I think the selling price was around 800,000. You could have had tons of room for lots and lots of doggers!!!!

Are they Rufous Hummingbirds Teri?....we don't see them on this side of the country ...although I have read that the odd one strays over here. You lucky duck that you see them so early, I'm not really expecting to see any until the end of the month, normally it is in May but I think this year will be a bit earlier, some of the trees are leafing out already. I've never seen that many Turkey Vultures together, far from it, the most I've ever seen is 6, waiting for me to pass on by so they could get back to their meal |

Nice to see hummers again, TeriM! There was a sighting in southern WI on the 4th, but now that it's colder again, the migration has apparently stalled out. We don't normally see them till very early May, so they're still on track for arriving about then. Would have been nice to see them early, though.
