Salmon Oil concerns

I have been raw feeding my cat for over a year and I do add salmon oil to his meal if not everyday then every other day. His coat is shiny and soft.

I have always heard from raw feeders it is really good for Omega's, etc. and is safer than fish. But today someone I was conversing with was very adamant that you should not give your cats salmon oil because of the risk of UTI's, crystals, etc. I tried to search on the internet regarding salmon oil and giving it to cats and all I came up with was that it was really good to give to cats. And there wasn't really anything that I could find bad. Does anybody know of the risks for UTI's, etc. giving cats salmon oil?

Thanks for your help!

Never heard such a thing. I do know that "spoiled" fish protein (such as might be used in pet food) contains high levels of histamine, which is pro-inflammatory, which could result in urinary tract issues among other things. But that's not the same as fish oil, which is actually anti-inflammatory. So ya, unless this person has a reference, I'm not buying it.

If you are supplementing with salmon oil, fish oil or krill oil and the brand you use does not have vitamin e added then you will have to supplement with that a few times a week as salmon oil, etc depletes the body of vitamin e.

If you've been feeding it to your cat for a year with no problems, he's healthy, with a shiny coat, then I'd say it's not doing any harm at all.

You won't notice anything right away but salmon oil/fish oil will deplete the body of vitamin e over time.

we feed fish oil on occassion (if I remember) Usually we feed fish once a week or twice a week. I do know that cod liver oil can be dangerous, as it contains vitamin b and you can easily overdose them on it and damage their liver. I did not know that salmon oil depletes Vitamin E. that's interesting

We supplement with Vit. E once a week, due to the reasons Rainbow mentions. Our entire family supplements with Vit. E because of it (it goes for humans AND for pets).

The reason you supplement with Vit. E is that omegas use up all the chromium and selenium, which are what binds Vit. E. Having a Vit. E supplement that has selenium and chromium is a benefit. We find that "perfect skin", from Greens+ works well for that. It has omegas, Vit. E, selenium and chromium.

It's actually vitamin A in cod liver oil that can be toxic in large doses. Because it's fat soluble, any excess gets stored in the body instead of being eliminated in the urine like vitamin B or C is.

Most fish oil has rosemary extract as a preservative - rosemary extract is high in vitamin E, but it is true that the body uses up its store of vitamin e in processing the omega's in fish oil.

I have also read that cod liver oil is not a good choice since it can contain toxins. And since the liver is the organ that filters the toxins in the body, it makes sense that any product made from it would contain those toxins.
