Bad Reaction to the Rabies Vaccine
I took Gianna to the Vet 2 days ago to have her 3 year Rabies Vaccine. She
did really well at the Vet, besides talking and winning like someone was killing her. (We take her to the Vet in PetSmart, and every customer in the place came to see her because she was sooooo loud) the Vet had mentioned that she may be a little sore and it may swell a bit by the injection site. I thought nothing of it, b/c she had never had a bad reaction to the last rabbies vaccine she got. This was my first time at this Vet, only b/c my original Vet was going to charge me over $100 to get the vaccine, while this new vet charged me $8 to register her for the vaccine and $18 for the visit. Well the Vet had called me yesterday afternoon to ask if how she was doing, (which I thought was the greatest thing) and at that point she seemed to be doing fine. She was sleeping on "her couch" like normal. It wasn't until she was waiting for her food that I noticed the HUGE bump that was so sore to the touch. I also noticed she wasn't acting like herself. My boyfriends friend had come over (who she absolutely adores) and she really didn't get as excited as she usually does. I felt her, and she felt warm. I called my Mom right away (she works for a Emergency Vet back in New Jersey) and she told me to go out and get a thermometer. Which I did right away and her temp was 102.9, only slightly high. So I gave her a 1/2 of Rimadyl like my mom had said and waited a 1/2 hour before I took her temp again. (I just so happen to have many extra meds in the house just for this occasion) When i took it again, it only went down to 102.7, and my mom wanted it below 102.5. (my mom also scared me and told me if her temp dropped too fast she might have a seizure, which scared me greatly) So now i had to soak her pads in rubbing alcohol and put a wet towel over her entire body. poor beastie, I would hate to have that down to me when I had a fever. But it worked, and hour later, it was down to 101.9. This morning she is back to normal, her temp is 101.5, and the swelling is down a little. I felt so bad for her yesterday, she would just look at me with her sad eyes. Gianna already has enough problems to deal with, she doesn't deserve to go thru this too. Stupid Rabbies Vaccine!!! I'm also very thankful to have my Mom who works for a Vet, b/c i would have probably taken her to the Emergency Vet here and spent over $500 for them to do the same as what I had done at home. |

A fever and lethargy are pretty standard responses to vaccinations among our dogs--it's the immune system kicking in that makes them feel icky. If she's not acting normally by Monday, a call to the vet is in order, but I suspect she'll be okay by then.
You should keep an eye on the swelling, though. Was it just at the injection site or was it a general swelling? Either way, it's something you ought to mention next time the rabies shot is due. If the swelling is just at the injection site, check it once a week to make sure it's resolving (don't check it more often, cuz you risk getting it all irritated and inflamed and making it get bigger......yes, he he I speak from experience on that one! ) If it gets larger or doesn't seem to be going down after a few weeks, have a vet check that out, too.

About the next time: I'm sorry to say, but I don't think she will live another 3 years to get it again. Her other disease will probably take her before then. :sad:But we'll be celebrating her 6th birthday this comming June. Oh yes, we are having a party Birthday cake, birthday candles, and a birthday song, just for her!!! We've had them before for her, and she really seems like she knows that the party is for her, and when we sing the birthday song, she knows we're singing it to her. I'll try to get it on the video camera this year! |

I'm sorry you and she have had such a hard time.
The party sounds like a blast, though. Our dogs all love the birthday song, too--when they hear it they know there will be extra Toys and special games all day.
