my dog licks the carpet when he's sick

My dog pants and pants and licks the carpet when he needs to vomit. He wants to get outside so he can eat grass, and I don't know what to do when he gets like this. He is about 10 years old, he has made himself sick many times over the years by getting into baking chocolate (it's on the top shelf now,) powder, flour...stupid stuff. We are always careful, but sometimes he eats the most bizarre things. THEN he pants and licks the carpeting and sometimes coughs these loud pitiful coughs until he eventually vomits and/or settles down. It's heartbreaking to see him so out of sorts when this happens...any knowledge on this?

Grass

Dogs have pica's,which means they have cravings for certain things or they eat certain things, even when it makes them sick

If you feel hes going to be sick, take him outside and let him eat some grass, this is how he knows to settle his stomach or make himself vomit.Just make sure the grass isnt treated with any chemicals.

licking the carpet maybe his way to get some fiber so that he can vomit...grass is fiber to dogs, and they know when they arent getting enough,

I would take him to the vet for acheckup though to make sure there arent any stomach blockages or intestinal problems
