Possible disease in German shepherds paw
I have a 9 year old German shepherd dog, on his right paw all of the nails have lifted and fallen off. He has a hard time putting pressure on it but all of his other paws are fine.
He has been seen by a vet who said it could either be a yeast infection or some type of disease. He is going back today for a swab test to see if it is a yeast infection but if it turns out not to be the options we were given were a punch test, or amputation of a toe for biopsy. I am hoping it is just a yeast infection. My question is has anyone else seen or heard of anything like this? And what was the outcome? |

I couldn't find any information on here about anyone experiencing anything similar with the toenails. Doesn't mean somebody on here hasn't.
Sending for your boy, that it turns out to be something not too serious. Please update us on the results of the vet visit.

Yes, this is an autoimmune condition that can affect GSDs. I can't remember the name of it. GSDs are susceptible to many autoimmune issues unfortunately

Update:
Thank you MaxaLisa, your link was very helpful. From reading the information and pictures provided I believe that is what my dog has.. Although my dogs nails were bloody and seemed like infection was coming on.. which was not mentioned in the link..
The vet gave him some medicine (although I am not sure if it was to treat SLO or a yeast infection) He seemed to perk back up and return to his old self for a few days but lately I have noticed that he seems lethargic some days and I have also noticed a discharge from his eyes and his nails are starting to lift on other paws... I am going to print the information you have sent and take it with me to the vet. |

I'm so sorry to hear this.
There are some things that you can do with supplements and diet to try to combat this without drugs. But drugs might be needed. Who knew, there is a yahoo group for this: http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/SLOdogs/ |
