Petsiting problem
I'm petsiting two dogs, and two cats part time for some people I know. The one dog is very sad, and had been sad for a week before they left. Its the first day, and she won't perk up. All she does, except for getting a treat, is lay at the foot of the bed, and she growls when you touch her, or get near to her. The owners are away for the next week, and by that time, I don't know what will happen! It'll be one sad dog! Also, this dog is older, (almost ten years) and I'm worried about that too. Help! Does anybody have ANY suggestions of how I can get her to perk up so she can actualy be happy? I'm so worried

You say she was "sad" for a week before the owners left? If so, she may be sick or in pain. Dogs certainly can pine for their families, but not before the family is gone.
I suggest you contact the owners and tell them their dog needs a vet. Did they give you the number of their vet before leaving? If you can't contact them, you should just take the dog. |

No, she isn't sick or in pain, because when I took her for a walk, she ran and played as normal. But they do have a way of knowing if your leaving or not. A dog I used to have "knew". Every time we started packing to leave, he used to get so sad. I want to keep her occupied, so tomorow, I'll fill her little ball up with "Pupperonies", and cuddle with her on the couch while we watch a program. Any other idea of how I could keep her occupied?

Can you contact her people and ask if they have any ideas?
She could still be feeling a bit miserable or sick, just not enough to stop her from being happy about getting out for walkies. Is she eating, drinking, and pooping like normal? I'd also vote for a vet visit, growling when approached doesn't sound like a happy dog. And it would be wise to rule out anything medical, just to be sure. Especially with an elderly dog.

Good news: I just remembered she had an eye infection about a week before they left. That might have been what had caused the "sadness", but she was unhappy about them leaving a few days before they left. I'll get her owners to call her and talk to her on the phone. It still might help for her to hear their voices, even if it is through the phone. And also, she was a lot better this morning, and as for the growling, she is a growly dog, even when she's happy. I just don't want to risk a bite! She didn't gaurd her "parent's" bed anymore this morning, so I think she might have been having a bad day the first day she left. Well, it still would help if I could have some games suggested, because I can't find the pink roll-a-treat ball. I'm not sure if she is eating, or drinking like normal, but she is pooping like normal. One thing I know, is that the water bowls were dry when I came in the morning, so she must have drunk them dry, or the other petsiter emptied them before she left for the night. She gets fed in the afternoon, so I don't get to feed her.
