krdahmer, my wish is evidently your command, cuz the bloody things got scraped off today. Still don't know what it is...but now you can see the base of it and it looks pretty irritated and weird, too. Frankly, we're now wondering if perhaps it's neither extraneous nails nor a histiocytoma.

But as to them falling off, Frenchy, I've read that many of the freaky nails do spontaneously fall off and the skin reverts to normal. So that may be exactly what it is.

We'll find out on Saturday.

Hazel - I am crossing fingers and toes and paws and whatever else can be crossed that you will soon have at least one week free of medicines! It seems like there is always something going on around there! for you and lots of kisses for the pups.

Just please don't rename Brier wart hog. It's gonna be interesting what the vet says about this. I hope all goes well, my toes and fingies are crossed. I'll suggest Sadie do the same but must wait until she's done her beauty nap for the night

Hugs alll around

keratoacanthoma

We have a diagnosis: keratoacanthoma. It's a benign tumor that involves the hair follicle and results in a horny growth that curves under...extraneous toenails. ("I told ya so!" he he Sorry...just practicing for hubby. )

Unfortunately, they do not usually resolve on their own, although they do on occasion. So it will likely have to be surgically removed. But we'll do it later toward fall unless it gets infected or overly irritated before then.

Wow....two dogs with weird things involving hair follicles. I am so glad it is a benign thing.

And it would be really nice if you were one of the lucky few where it just went away on it's own .....cuz it's time you got a break.

What did the vet say about Ridge?

Oh, and I'm really glad that you get to say "I told ya so" to hubby.

Ridge came home with another 2 weeks of clavamox. She has to get checked again when we get close to the end of the two weeks. She's improving, but there is still some residual infection that has to resolve before we can do the protocol for the leptospirosis. It's a slow process, but we're getting there!

hubby didn't cook for me this evening, but we got madame hazel to do it. She's a better cook than either of us are.

Be sure to do a regular face check after wrestling & pack games outside especially in the summer to make sure he doesn't get scraped/bit there cuz that could result in an infection - though I'm sure you already know that

it does go away on its own & soon

More for Ridge too

Actually, we were just discussing timing this afternoon --probably we'll opt to have it taken off once it gets a little warmer. It already gets irritated--remember the first set of 'nails' got scraped off during play--and the chance of infection is just too great.

We also have to remember to check him over periodically for new growths--evidently once they've grown one set of extra toenails, they often end up growing more

Ridge managed to scrape her poor nose running into a door this morning in her eagerness to get to breakfast. The scars are very tender and soft and evidently are going to damage easily. But so far there's no indication that the scrape this morning is going to lead to a flare-up of the infection there.

Thanks, breeze.

Brier actually doesn't seem too bothered by the fact that his alter ego is trying to emerge from his cheek. If it weren't for the chance of infection, we'd likely let it be.

Just an update for anyone looking for information on keratoacanthomas...

Over the past few weeks, I've been checking for 'nails' about once a week. Shortly after the nails fell off, the affected area was raw-looking, red, hard to the touch and about 5 mm across. Over the weeks, it's subsided, getting paler and shrinking in size. This week when I checked for it, I was unable to find it.

Two possibilities come to mind: 1. the affected hair follicle has just gone dormant (which they do periodically) and when it comes out of dormancy, the 'nails' will regrow; or 2. the mysterious and oh-so-talented body is fixing the genetic mutation that resulted in the 'nails' in the first place, and they won't reappear.

Of course, we're rooting for the 2nd possibility!
