Importance of recall (or in my case "That'll Do")

Woooooo.....close call tonight. I was out working late, it was deep twilight, almost dark. Of course the dogs were working off leash, we were down past the public walkways in town, sending the geese further downstream and I was telling the dogs "look" to keep an eye on the geese and keep them moving. They looked all right...right at a couple of skunks that suddenly appeared out of the bushes by someone's driveway and they began to run to investigate

Luckily they listened to my franctic "THAT'LL DO!!!" and escaped unskunked. Rain was quick to listen and I leashed her. Storm did disappear behind some bushes for a minute and I though for sure he'd get sprayed. He came around the bushes and was about 6' from one skunk that flipped it's tail up. He bounced back a little and then listened and came to me and I breathed a big sigh of relief.

Whew!!! And thank heavens it wasn't a phew-weee! Good dogs!

I wonder if Storm got a bit of pre-spray whiff?

I didn't smell anything but I'm sure he probably could. I've noticed a few times in the winter when one or more of my dogs will get a faint skunky odor on their heads, I think there must be a skunk den near the back of my property that they sometimes investigate when we're out walking around my trail. I don't know where it it but my guess is that they get nosing around it and end up getting some scent on them. If it can transfer that easily I'm sure the skunks themselves must carry some smell on them and the dogs could notice it even if the skunk doesn't spray. I think tonight given how close myself and my daughter and the dogs were to the skunks, if either one of them had sprayed I think we all would have been pretty stinky, even if we didn't get a direct hit.

About as close as I want to get to one too. They are cute little beggars if you can get past their smell.
