nasty dog habit
Hi all!
I have a german sheppard that has a nasty habit of eating fecis  . She is feed a recommended dog food for sheppards so I do think that she is getting the vitamins that she needs, plus I know that she doesn't have worms.She has been doing this since she was pup (now 3 years old). She knows that she should do this because she tries ti hide it. Can anyone help? Discussed, Virginia

How charming. Coprophagia. Lukka sometimes will do it too. Lots of young dogs do it under a variety of theories. Usually they outgrow the behavior. Are you sure she doesnt have worms? I have heard it said that you can try mixing some meat tenderizer in her food (MSG). That deters some (but not all) dogs. She may also be missing B vitamins.

It is a habit many dogs enjoy and common in wild canines as well, so could very well be instinctual, many dogs will only do in the winter, which could make it an instinctual self presevation to ensure survival when sufficient food in the wild would be hardest to find, also females who recently had a litter would do to keep the den clean. I do beleive that is main reason is instinct rather than diet, because even many dogs that eat very high quality foods will continue to do so

There are tablets you can give your dog around mealtime which are supposed to curb this habit... They are called Deter or Forbid. I have heard they work as long as you continue giving your dog the tablets. I am not sure what they are made of, if they are recommended or not...just a suggestion though.
 I have the same problem with my dogs, but I am a bit apprehensive about using these. We are going to try switching to higher quality dog food first. Anyone know anything about these tablets?

We tried Forbid with Cassie, who started to do this a couple of years ago. It stopped, so we stopped giving it to her, and she was stopped completely until the next winter. I discovered it is a winter thing with her for some reason
 So now we just be extra clean everytime she goes outside, we make sure we get it all.
