Solid Gold food or something similar?
Does anyone feed Solid Gold to your dog? Any good/ bad experiences with it?
The reason I am asking is because I NEED to switch dog food. Up until now, I have been feeding Wellness Super 5 Mix (Chicken) with good results. We recently moved to a small town to discover that Wellness is not available here. I called the pet store and asked if they had anything similar and they said Solid Gold. I looked up their product line and saw one called "barking at the moon high protein" and it sounds pretty good. Does anyone have any recommendations or other brands? It is for my 8 month old dog, Molly. she weighs 28 lbs and is quite active and very lean.

Boston ate Solid Gold BATM for a little while, before we switched to raw. He seemed to like and the only thing we noticed was he had smelly gas. We switched when Solid Gold removed the salmon from the formula and then increased the price. All in all its a good product though.

I feed raw too, but before I did I fed "Barking at the Moon" as well and the dogs did well on it. I'd say go for it.

Thanks List and Sabine
Should I be concerned about anything since it's 'high protein'? I will try to make the switch as slowly as possible but to be honest I don't have a lot of Wellness left now I know to always have extra on hand!!! Slightly off topic, has anyone tried their treats?

I'm not a high protein expert. I feed SG, but I feed the lamb formula. I love the SG jerky treats, in fact, I used them alot when training my dog. great quality training treats.

Hi Mollywog,
what breed is your dog and how old is he ? If he's still in the growing phase I would refrain from feeding high protein, since the protein in dry food is mostly derived from plant sources and is therefore not animal protein which you find in meat. (Hence the joint problems dogs get prone to on high protein kibble, while dogs fed on a raw diet most likely won't have those problems. ) Anyways - why don't you feed another Solid Gold product that has less protein, i.e. Hund 'n Flocken or something like that.

Sabine- my dog is 8 months old so she is still growing. She is a Lab/ Whippet cross (we think) and is very lean and quite active. I am thinking that the Hund n Flocken will be the best choice (Lamb) for now.
Jessi- thanks for the jerky treats suggestion. I will give them a try! (Well, I won't, but you know what I mean! )

Yes, even large breed puppies, as it's the calcium and phosphorous levels that are what you need to be concerned about. |

My pup is on Solid Gold right now. She seems to have a lot of gas, but since she's only been on it for a week she might still be adjusting.
Other than that, stools are firm and regular, and no problems. She gobbles it up (then again, I'm pretty sure she'd eat anything). |

I am feeding my new puppy the solid gold puppy formula HUNDCHEN FLOCKEN. But, since your dog is bigger if the store you are going to carries it I would recommend the Solid Gold wolf cub. This particular brand of food is formulated specifically for large breed dogs. I have put many labs, goldens, etc. on it before and they do great on it. The main protein source of the food is bison, also it still does have grains in it so your puppy will have a much easier time adjusting to it from the wellness which also contains grains.

she isn't a large breed by any means. She is 30 lbs and pretty much full grown now. I originally posted this about 3 months ago and ended up switching to Hund n Flocken with good results. She loves the jerky treats too!
