car sick dog

Our dog gets car sick even for short 10-15 minute rides. Is there any cure for this besides drugs??

My mom's dog also gets car sick. I think he is just afraid of the car becuase even when we just sit in the car with it turned off he starts to salivate and get sick. he works himslef up and gets so nervous that he throws up. does your dog seem afraid of the car or just gets sick from the motion of the car moving? if he is afraid of the car you'll just have to desensitize him to it. but if he gets motion sickness that could be harder to solve. if it's motion sickness you might be able to talk to your vet about some solutions. others on the site might be able to help you with it.

I don't think she is afraid - but she is a herder so she has a lot of energy and gets herself very excited and then throws up - I think it's motion because if I can drive very slowly and take corners very carefully she's better.

If you take her everywhere with you in the car even a short trip to the store she will get used to it. I had a dog who hated the car and would always puke, I started to take her everywhere with me and it took time and a lot of cleaning up but she got to the point where she would get in the car with me as soon as I opened the door.

Re: car sick dog

Try giving the dog a slice of fresh ginger about 1/2 hour before you have to go out. Fresh ginger works really well for controlling car sickness not only in animals but humans as well.
