Koi are all spooked tonight

Something tried to land in the watercress in the pond today, I noticed as soon as I got home that there was a huge gap in it. It's at least 4 feet out from the shoreline, so must have been another heron come to visit Must have had quite the nasty surprise when it realized it wasn't solid ground it was landing on. Anyway, now all the koi are staying deep and out of sight until dark I hope they snap out of it quickly, they need to come up to feed well this time of year to get through winter.

No geese in our yard yet, but one landed in the neighbors yard this year. They fly over all the time heading for the flood plain and the golf course and natural ponds around here. We do get ducks every spring for a brief period, they don't stick around long because of the dogs and my big stray cat Max. Doesn't make for a nice safe nesting site I like to see them, but they make a real mess of the pond. The fish don't seem to mind them.

None of the fish are missing. I was out there with a flashlight a little while ago to check. The pond has been designed to discourage herons, they can't wade into it and they can't fish from the sides it's too well planted and they can't stretch out past the vegetation to nab the fish, I guess that's why it tried landing on the watercress....it does look like an island in the pond, I'm sure it was a nasty surprise to the heron when he found out it wasn't solid ground

that the heron was unpleasantly surprised enough to not come back! Would have been a fun landing to watch, though!

You gotta remember, koi get to be over 3 feet long, so if you want to keep more than a couple, they need a big pond.

That's a big pond. I think it's safe to call it a small lake I don't know anything about Koi so had no idea how big they get. Thanks for the explaination

lol well im guessing if

u want to redo your koi pond (from one part of your back yard to another) why dont u rent a back hoe? I live on the lakeside, so if i was to do some landscaping, i wud have room. If u live in the city, access to your back ally should work. the back hoe would get you roughly the depth and the area dug out, all you would have to do is the leveling and installation.

Pond is as big as it's going to be I'm afraid. I'd have to take out one of the rose beds to make it any bigger and I'd have to add another 1,000 gallon pond just to act as the filter (I use bog filtration), for anything bigger than I have now. We thought about a backhoe when we started to dig, but we'd have to take down part of the fence and let it destroy one of the rose beds to get it up to the pond.
