Kibble feeders - do you use toppings?
I have been using Tripett's Green Tripe and Evanger's Hunk of Beef canned food as toppings on the dogs kibble. I also cook different meats for them (or cook extra while I'm cooking) and use that as a topping. The kibble is EVO Original formula.
Malone will eat whatever I put in front of him, but Hazel is picky. I know I've made her picky because I've always put something on top of the kibble, whether that was some kind of meat that I'd cooked or something that I bought. So now if I give her dry kibble, she just looks at me - then looks at her bowl, over and over. LOL You can tell plainly that she is trying to say "Ahem.......I believe you forgot something". Lately, Hazel has decided that she doesn't care for the tripe as much as the Evanger's. And even with the Evanger's there are some days that she just sighs, like "geez, this stuff again???". Of course there are no complaints if it's something that I've cooked for them.......LOL. But I was wondering if anyone use toppings on dry kibble, and if you do, what do you use?

Well hubby can resist the pitiful "I'm wasting away here and all I get is dry kibble?" look - I can't. LOL When I'm gone, they get dry kibble and boy do I hear about it when I get home! If I'm only gone for a meeting or something, I usually find that Hazel hasn't eaten her dinner. If I'm gone overnight, she'll eat what he gives her. Then when I get home she acts like he has tried to starve her to death while I was gone. LOL
He tells me all the time that if I would quit giving her extras on her food, she'd eat it dry all the time. Well yeah, I suppose she would - but that's got to be mighty boring.

Have you tried plain yogurt? Our dogs love it mixed with their food. Not as meaty as what Hazel normally gets, but it might make it 'novel' enough to break up the boredom for her.
Sorta like Frosted Flakes.

Mine are all good eaters regardless of whether they get plain dry kibble, moistened kibble or topped with extras. The extras could include any leftover scraps we have, but when they're working I cook a lot of chicken to make sure I have broth, soup, gravy or leftover chicken for them and I add water to their food to make sure they're staying well hydrated. On non-working days I don't always add anything extra except the water and in the hot weather I usually stop adding water entirely. I've found that in the heat their appetites will sometimes drop and I don't want to have soggy leftover food sitting around so I stop adding the water since they always have plenty of fresh water available anyhow.

I don't feed much kibble but I have recently started to cook for my old girl Lucy as she is no longer digesting raw bone very well. I throw ground chicken or turkey or stewing beef in the crock pot with veggies and either sweet potato/yam/potato. I then freeze into daily portions. She loves it and so does my other dog so might be an alternative to consider instead of canned .

I usually feed dry, but mine eat just fine.
Periodically I do give them treats on it, but it's usually just plain eggs, yogurt, plain meat, or fat free low sodium canned chicken broth (the latter I usually only give if I have some leftover from a recipe, I don't buy it specifically for them). |

I've always mixed their kibble with canned/cooked food. I use different makes/flavours of the canned food.....I think plain old kibble day in, day out must be awful boring for them.

I have given yogurt and even cottage cheese in the past, although it's been awhile. Normally if I buy cottage cheese, hubby scarfs it before the dogs get any. LOL I also use pumpkin now and again - although the dogs definitely prefer something meat based to not. I used to soak the Timberwolf, but there were times when Hazel would decide that whatever I had added wasn't good enough and then I'd have to throw out her food so I quit doing that.
I too think that plain kibble day in and day out would be hugely boring. I've never thought about cooking up a bunch of something and then freezing it into individual servings - that's a good idea! Thanks guys! Now I have some options on how to give them a little more variety.

I'd imagine that I could Hazel to the point where she would eat her kibble dry, but I'm too much of a softy and she knows it. LOL

I give eggs all different ways. As long as they're fresh I've given them raw with shells (but Walnut doesn't seem to like the shell and eats around it). Some dogs actually don't seem to like raw egg at all though.
I don't give shell from cooked eggs, but I have given hard boiled, soft boiled and scrambled eggs before. Dogs really like cooked eggs. I dunno about dogs, but I had a cat once that would eat egg yolk and wouldn't eat any of the whites . Depends on the animal I guess. |

Although both my boys would eat the plain kibble I always add something to hide their daily supplements. It's usually a little meat or fish cut up that I've saved from our suppers for them. If I don't have anything then I will scramble an egg for them or open a can of sardines. They also get plain yogurt added to both their meals.

I always add quality canned food, sardines, gravy or my own meats cooked with a little water. My dogs do dances for their dinner. I think plain kibble is boring.

I just switched Ranger over to EVO red meat and he's going nuts for it plain. He was eating Orijen 6 fish and, being a retriever, would never turn his nose up a meal but was definitely becoming less enthusiastic about the Orijen. Coincidentally, he also started not doing as great on it thus the switch.
I'll put a raw egg (shells included) on top of it to mix in with his probiotics and enzymes about twice a week. Otherwise it's just a splash of water with the probiotics. Sometimes if i'm having tuna/salmon for supper I'll pour the liquid onto his kibble. I've heard some people top off kibble with sardines but I'd be worried about making ranger gassy. Luckily Ranger is going nuts for his Evo red meat so I don't have too worry about making it interesting! |

I don't know if it's me..but I like to give my dogs a variety. I feel bad if they eat the same thing day in day out. I say this because I ate spagetti for one week straight and I was totally disgusted by the end of that week.
So - I feed Acana Pacifica with canned Merrick and then another day I will feed the kibble with boiled fish, kibble with yogurt and sometimes add the egg. I also give the min pin only (because the GSD cannot eat chicken or red meat) stewed beef. One of my dogs has a cast iron stomach, while the other does not. I had to learn to balance the food and find out what I could mix and what I could not. |

I used to have to top my puppy's food with gravy or meat toppers or yogourt to get her to eat but since switching to Fromm large breed puppy, she does not need any help to get her to eat - she goes nuts over it.
This might sound crazy but all three of the dogs in the house are on 3 different dog foods - my little Terrier is on Acana wild prairie - tried him on small breed adult and OMG the gas that would come out of him could kill a family LOL! The Husky is on Acana Pacifica and the GSD pup is on Fromm Gold large breed puppy. They all eat their food with no toppings required - that being said, every day or every other day they get raw soup bones with the marrow and such to give them something different and healthy to chew on rather then the back yard or my leather couch Norm |

I'm just going on what LP said once/many times.....I consider her knowledge good in that department....plus I have done it ever since we have had dogs, some 35 years now and never had any problems
