? found worm in dog urine

I am stumped with this find. I have been online all morning and have not seen or read anything that tells me that dogs have worms in their urine.

Our new addition Dakota. She is a Great Pyr and will be 5 mths old on Nov. 18, 2008. I have been having test at the vet as she has been sick with crystals and white blood cells and a high ph.

So after all the testing they inform me that she will have to go through her first heat cycle. She has no crystal anymore in her urine and there were no white cells in her bladder or stones. The only problem was her PH was 7. It went from 7.5 to 6 back to 7. I checked it this morning and it seems to have gone back to 6. They changed her food for this problem but she lost a tooth and cannot chew large hard kibbles at the moment. I will return it and then try the orijin on the market. As she is a large breed and adult food at the moment concerns me even if the vet said she should be fine.

They also gave her worm medicine and gave me a syringe with some more to give her 2 weeks later. So a week from this monday I will give her second dose.

This morning I decided to check her urine's ph. Well low and behold I found a worm in it. It is 1/2 an inch long and looks like it has legs and a brown head and lines on its body. Can this be. I cannot find anything showing dogs have worms in there urine. I find it hard to believe that I got it from the grass this morning. I used a laddle to get her pee and a bright flashlight. Any suggestions as to what is wrong. Are they coming out from the worm medicine. I will check it daily now. As I am very concerned. I will be dropping it off at the vet this morning when they open.

Unless you specifically saw it come out, then no... not possible.

If you still um, have it, a picture would be helpful. But parasitic worms don't have legs... so... it must have gotten stuck to your dogs area back there and dropped off when you were looking.

I hope it worked. I attached a picture. I find it hard to believe it came from her fur. We woke up and I took her outside immediately and I follow her and she squats for a pee and I put the laddle under her. I'm assuming it must of came from a blade of grass then if there is no such thing as worms in the urine or with legs.

Pic is too small to see legs, but if it has any, it is not a worm, it is a caterpillar--larvae of some moth. since there are dozens of species of caterpillars in BC, you might have fun trying to identify it.

Yeah, it's not a worm. A bigger picture would be handy. I'm a bit of a bug geek, I'm thinking you've got a beetle grub from your description which would just be weird. Email me the pic at help_jaida at hotmail dot com and I'll do my best to help id it.

Bendyfoot who would have guessed you were a bug geek! I would be curious to know what it is as well. Do share the info when you find out.

Yeah, I have an entomology background.

I'm pretty sure it's a beetle. But no pictures yet

Okay, Okay. Everyone is laughing. Even the vet. I am just anal when it comes to my babies. I sent you the pictures I took of the worm or bug. It does have legs and ring like markings around the body. It had a brown like head and a bit of the same colour on the back end.

Anyway I have been told it did not come from her pee.

Truly sorry. I cannot figure out how to attached within the body and get a bigger picture. I have a problem trying to make them smaller to upload. Wishing I were a geek.

Well, the pics are a bit blurry, my initial thoughts from the small picture was that youu've got one of three things: an butterfly larva, a bettle larva (grub) or a sawfly larva. The bigger picture makes it easier to see the prolegs (there are 5 sets of little stumpy legs on the abdomen), which is making me agree with DoubleRR's assessment that it's a caterpillar. But I'm going to say that it's a butterfly, not a moth, mainly because moth caterpillars are typically pretty furry. Cool! (And definitely not coming from your dog's pee!)

It should be fairly easy to identify, bendyfoot. There can't be that many butterflies that use Great Pyrs as host plants...

I just couldn't resist Blame it on fatigue...or insanity...that works, too.

Worm

Thanks. I never new much about what a butterfly or moth looks like before becoming one. I actually thought the fuzzy caterpillars became butterfly's.

It's hard to believe something so unattractive can become a beautiful butterfly. I have a lot of fuzzy caterpillars in the area. I also have a beautiful moth that I have taken pictures of because it was so big.

I wonder what type of caterpillar it is that becomes this big moth. I try not to step on the caterpillars I have so many.

I will keep in mind that those hairless worms are butterfly's and put them in a safe place also like I do the caterpillars.

Thanks.

my 12 week old puppy is having lot of them also i seen the picture and immediately knew it was the same thing as my pup my father said worms will never have worms come from the pee of the dog but he said it is very likely that its from larva from fleas and my pup does have a lot of fleas so we went to the store and got some flea shampoo/prevention supplies so we will see if this fixes the problem

jameswhilhelm, this is a very old post. Myself I can only see the tiny photo but it looks like it could be the segment from a tape worm. If you are seeing small white worms about the size of a large grain of white rice, they might be dead or still moving, google up on tape worms as well. Special meds from your Vet are needed for tapeworm.
