I brought buddy home yesterday and all seems fine (well almost see.....training) But this morning he made a hoarse sorta weird sound the only thing i can relate it to is the sound a cat makes when tryin to cough up a hairball same sorta thing. Do Dogs get hairballs what is this sound??

Mine have made those noises if they have something stuck in their throat, like a piece of grass in kasha's case!

Oh and i forgot to say, this usually happens when they are quite excited and from reading your post on training buddy sounds like he is quite excited all the time! If this sounds similar there is probably nothing wrong - just got a bit of fluff or something stuck whilst playing.

Ok stupid question? Could he be hoarse from barking? We had a Cairns Terrier that would make himself hoarse from coughing.

Could it be that you were holding his collar and he was pulling against it? That always makes my dog cough. Its like he gags himself.

Buddy's Cough

Didn't he just come from the SPCA? God knows what he got into there. His throat could be irritated form a cleaning solution they used in the kennels.
I'd bet he has a irritated throat from sonething.

I haven't heard the cough since so I presume it was probably the irritating fumes from the spca as I said before it was just overwhelming. I am used to bad smells ( 8 cats need I say more?) but this was unacceptable. Smelled like urine, poop, pine sol, and bleach all in one.... way to much cleaner in the air. I was surprised because it didn't smell that bad the first time I went there .

They gave me a voucher for a vet visit which I will use if valid where I live , even if it's not I want to get him checked anyway have the Dr. look at his ears and weigh him......he is very tall and lanky you can see his ribs and feel his back bones very prominantly makes me wonder if this is normal or has he been under fed?

Bleach & Pine SOl??

Jumping Jimmy Crickets they might as well gas the poor buggers. (Only kidding)
Anyone with an ounce of sense should know not to use bleach in a contained area. Bleach mixed with urine emits a caustic gas that can burn lung and eye tissue. Bleach itself is bad enough and can burn the pads of feet.
I am a firm believer that Pine Sol is not good for animals since they get it on their feet and lick it off.
SPCA's sometimes don't hire the best or pay what it would take to get caring people and sometime people think killing germs and odors is all that counts forgetting the residual effects of the chemicals they use.

Iggette, Buddy could be going through a growing spurt, I hope he wasn't underfed. Just give him some extra food until his ribs disappear then cut back a bit. It should say on your dog food label how much is recommended. You should be able to feel his ribs not see them. I'd definitely beef up his food intake.
