It's green beef tripe... It's supposed to be green... not blue.

Green Tripe is the stomach of ruminants, unprocessed and unbleached (not for human consumption). it's super stinky and super nutritious, of course when it's not BLUE or PURPLE GRAY!! omg that is not normal and so gross! i wonder what went wrong with this batch??

My grandfather use to eat tripe but it was fresh and it was pure white. I'm not sure if it was beef or sheep tripe. But that is sick looking I wouldn't eat it.

bleached tripe for human consumption is completely different than the green, unprocessed tripe for dogs (btw green tripe is not guts, it's the stomach only)

Btw, the expiry date of this can is Jan 2008... So if anybody has some from that date... beware...

Yeah, stomach... That's sort of what I meant by guts...(punch in the gut...)

I hate to be a stinker (hardee-har) but it's not abnormal for tripe to range from a grey-blue with what looks looks like congealed egg white in it to a green-grey with white congealed globs. The level of green colour in the tripe is dictated by what was eaten by the ruminant and how much was undigested at time of "harvest".

I don't know anything about tripe, but sickly it sort of is the color of the carpeting my office, just a bit darker. Can you say Barf!? Now everytime I'm in my office (which of course is every day but sat and sun) i'm going to be thinking that the floor is tripe and it's squishing between my toes. Yuck!!! Sometimes it sucks to have a great imagination.

Which reminds me of another story...Tripe was considered a real treat by humans way back when mostly because the cooking process was so intensive. Even after it has been processed (cleaned and bleached), it still has to be cooked using a very slow cooking process (9-12 hours) and the water has to be changed at least seven times. When I first looked at home-cooked /raw for the grrrls I was "new" to dealing with meat. Having read in my dog nutrition books that tripe is both good for them and a real treat (but somehow having missed the raw, unbleached part) I bought some at the grocery store and finally found cooking instructions in one of my old-timey cookbooks. Well, I've smelled dead bodies that were less gag-worthy. Seriously, I have a strong stomach and I have never smelled anything that bad. The raw, green is positively perfume-worthy compared to the muck in my slow-cooker that morning.... Doggies loved it all the same though...

If a dog is allergic to beef, then would that also apply to the tripe?

Ummm... do we want to get graphic at dinner time? Think capillaries but also think fungi and all the kazillions of microbes which inhabit the rumen. I think it also depends on, in the case of beef tripe whether it's the rumen, reticulum, omasum or abomasum that's used. But I might be wrong. All the tripe I've ever seen for dogs varies from grey-blue to green. Now if it's foaming... that's bad.

We switched to lamb tripe because Declan couldn't tolerate beef in general or beef tripe. The canned lamb was fine and I found some fresh frozen and so far so good.

So he got back to me and said it was normal. Hmm... Took him a while to answer and he decided that the spots were black and not blue as I see them and that's normal. Moving on (to a different product)...

Yeah, it looks pretty normal to me compared to any cans i've bought. I only get whole tripe now, but again, its not too bad. I must get a video of my pup eating it. He takes a peice and shakes it out just like wolves do in the wild. Its cute to watch.

I'll feed him some tonight and get it on vid then

I get it from my supplier for all his food sells it. I think its 1.39/lb. Its usually sliced into large chunks though as they portion it out to the size I want, ie 1.5lb packs.
