foul odor
My eight year old german shepherd is suffering from something that the vet and I just can't pin down. At least twice a week for a full day she has a very foul odor coming from her genitalia but not her rectum. She has had her anal glands checked and they are clear this is actually from the other genitalia. She is kept clean, groomed once a month and diet never changes but all of a sudden she just stinks. My family is really going nuts with this. If you lift her leg the smell is overpowering but there is no sign of infection or anything. Any ideas?

When you say no sign of infection...did they do blood and urine samples as well as stool?
No high/low white blood cell counts?

german shepherd smells
Hi Luba,
They did a full geriatric work up and said she came back clean. We feed her Purina and have her whole life so I don't think it is the food she is eating and like I say it sometimes goes away for a day or so and suddenly is back with a vengeance. Kathy |

Well I suppose my next question is how are the bowels moving? Any constipation and whats the colouring look like.
I remember when my collie (first one) got sick when he was about 7 years old he began to smell really really bad. The constipation thing triggered us to take him to the vet. He had intestinal cancer and it spread rapidly. I have to tell you that Purina is a bad food full of preservatives and fillers. At this stage you should consider switching to a better, healthier brand of food. The dog food commercials for products like Purina are all cutsies and show active healthy dogs.... but those are commercials. It's like eating take out every day of your life, see what I mean. Your dog shouldn't have foul odors like that. There could be a bowel obstruction or constriction or some form of bacterial growth somewhere. Try a process of elimination and I also suggest a second opinion with a different veterinarian. Luba

How long has this been going on.The odor?
There's an odor but the vet sees no sign of infection?I find that odd. Is she fixed? Could be vaginal infection, bladder infection. I agree with Luba.I would get a second opinion. Something just doesn't seem right.

foul odor
Thanks all for your replies. I have been thinking about the food for a while and whether I should switch but any time I have tried she has immediately gotten a very runny stool. We have put her back on antibiotics because she also has a stubborn ear infection so maybe if it is some kind of system wide infection that will help to clear both things up. She is eating well and stool seems normal and the foul odor doesn't seem to bother her a bit!

The thing is whe you change a food, you have to do it gradualy.
You need to mix a bit of the new one to the old one.Do it for about a week. Then less of the old and a bit more of the new.Till it's just the new one. Not sure if you were doing that.So I thought I would mention it. Also, you never mentioned how long she has had this odor.

foul odor
Thanks ladies. Earlier I said she was on Purina but I meant Pedigree, I always mix the two up. That is a great idea to mix the old food with the new to slowly let her adjust to to a new food. Any ideas for good quality food for a mature large dog?
I've heard Iams is really good! |

Not sure were you are at, but where I am at, the pet stores have never heard of the Canine (can't remember how you were spelling it) or the Medcal! So I am stuck right now with Iams, or Science diet!

Thanks everyone for the good suggestions. It is really nice to see a group of pet owners so concerned about other peoples pets and willing to help out even just by letting you know they care.

Both Iams and Science Diet are garbage. If I had to feed my dogs a kibble dog food, I would go with Canidae. Cost is slightly more then Pedigree but more of the food is utilized so they eat less.
Your vet carries Science Diet because he is paid to, not because it is a good food.

I have no doubts about that. I also know the lady we bought our lab from used Eukanuba because they offer breeders a discount and the other brands don't so you can tell there wasn't concern over what was the best food and what wasn't. I haven't heard of the Canida one either, so I wonder if it isn't available in the US. Do any of the other US people have any suggestions as to a good food that I can get in the US? You can imagine what my back yard looks like with a dog as big as a lab, and a keashound eating regular kibble! But it sure does provide for some wonderfully green grass!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know a lot of people in the US who feed Canidae. All across the country. You just have to look. I know that either PetCo or Pet Supplies Plus carries it.

Well, the closest Petco is about an hour away, and I am horrible at planning ahead. Guess I will have to start working at that. I tend to buy my dog food in large bags, as I forget to plan ahead, and so I know I will run out at the worst time, so if I buy the big bags, then I have enough time to remind myself to get more.
