Turkey necks?
Hi!
Bilbo ( my basset) has colitis. (it's what my vet said last Friday) He was on Solid Gold Wolfking for two months and the second month was perfect! Stool was firm, the same color, the same time ... untill the last wednesday, when he started to poop with blood and water So he is on antibiotics and rice and chicken diet. But he is allergic to so many things and he's scratching even more since eating chicken. Today I bought turkey necks and want to try it. I'm not sure about neck bons. Can I give him entire boiled turkey neck or should take of the bones? Thanks! |

Raw turkey necks are awesome for doggies!!!! They are a great bone source, just don't cook em.

Thanks Puppyluv!
But I'm afraid to give him raw right now. he is still on antibiotics and his poop is not normal yet. He never was on raw before. Vet said only boiled. So boiled bones are not good? Even neck bones? I'm thinking about raw, but not right now. |

Hmm, in that case I would remove the bones. Cooked chicken, or turkey, bones are like asking for a disaster, even the soft ones in the neck.

Meri, you may want to feed turkey in very small amounts to your doggie if his gut is still troublesome as turkey is quite rich. And if he is reacting to chicken why not switch to another source of protein ? Have you thought about fish like tuna or a white fish? Lots of dogs can't handle poultry but are able to digest fish.

Hope you don't mind my 2 cents! I would be careful of adding anything new to you doggie's diet at this point as it may make things worse. Changing his food, even to chicken and rice, could backfire on you (literally, tee hee). I have a dog who is allergic to chicken and have had a really hard time finding a food for him that doesn't give him the splats. He's on Holistic Blend Lamb and Rice now and does very well on it, I don't know if you'd want to give that a try. Also as PP said, fish based foods are good for sensitive types, and so are duck based foods. Good luck to you!

OK. I feel a little bit lost at this point
When I got Bilbo last February, his previous owner gave me his food leftovers ( "1st choice" duck formula). He didn't tell me that Bilbo has allergy issue, just said that Bilbo likes it and doing well on it. Bilbo is my first dog, so I didn't know much about dog food and continued on that food. Bilbo vomited once a week and sometimes had moist poop. Also he started to scratch himself as soon as snow melted and the first grass appeared. So I vent to the vet clinic and they gave me a bag of Medi-Cal Gastro. I tried - no difference - just more scratching. Than I found this forum and got more info about food. I swithched Bilbo to Solid Gold Wolfking 2 1/2 months ago. He did fine. Still scratched, but less. And as I wrote on my first post - last Wednesday - colitis  I keep his dry food at the kitchen (no airconditioning). Could it be poisoning because of recent heat? I don't know why this colitis happened to Bilbo. Maybe it will better if I switch him to homemade food? I don't know what to do  |

some dogs just don't do well on commercial food, no matter the kind or form. So yes, if you wish to try a home-made diet, why not? I would suggest doing some reading on the subject first, as a cooked home diet can be easily unbalanced: Dr Pitcairn wrote a very fine book on the subject http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/087...lance&n=283155
don't be afraid though, if you can feed yourself without a "how-to" guide, you can feed your dog Another alternative is the raw diet, many dogs with allergies and/or intestinal difficulties have gotten great relief from eating a natural raw diet. Whichever path you choose, you will find people here to guide you & share their cumulative knowledge!
