Hello Pet Forum
Hi, I visited here the first time on Jan. 28 as my dog was "scratching and has no fleas". When I typed that quoted phrase into the YAHOO search line this website came up with same quote. Hence, I visited it. Since then, we've had an emotional scare with our Gizmo. He had a severe seizure, while we were gone from home. Here is the story as we know it: I had taken Gizmo and his brother Rascal up the mountain with me to cut vines in an area. We stayed up there on a chilly day (both had sweaters on) for about two and a half hours. When coming home, Gizmo ran as he loves doing and this day he was so very fast running downhill, I sped my four wheeler to 24 mph and still didn't catch him. Since he was scratching while in the mountains, I decided to give him a quick bath before my husband and I left for the evening. I bathed Gizmo with Dial antibacterial liquid (human) soap thinking it might help stop his itching. Gizmo had some open cuts from his scratching that I noticed while bathing him. He took his bath, went outside to do his business, while still damp and I brought him back in and we left. When we came home, Gizmo wasn't at the door barking as usual and I knew immediately something was wrong. I found Gizmo sprawled out with his head up in a death stare. I just knew he was dying. There was phlegm everywhere in the heated shop and Gizmo didn't respond to voices. I picked him off the cool concrete floor and took him to our bathroom carpet. We didn't know what was wrong, but felt sure he was dying. It was late and our vet said he couldn't take Gizmo as he was flying out of town. I called Silent Unity for world-wide prayers for Gizmo. We kept him quiet and I put eyedroppers of water in his mouth ever hour so he could swallow. His gum color was great, he would swallow, he had no wounds and he was wet with phlegm. I prayed for some answer to his dilemma and I remembered back to three years ago when Gizmo had similar symptoms when we took him with us out of state. Before we left for that trip, I had also bathed him with DIAL antibacterial liquid (HUMAN) soap. That was the only identical thing for both of his phlegm type seizures. I called the 800 number on DIALS bottle and talked with their doctor. Although they could not tell me of any ingredients in the soap that might cause seizures in dogs, they were familiar with such happenings. The DIAL doctor said if the seizure was severe (which it was more severe with our not being home with him) it may take three to four days for Gizmo to fully recover and remember things. Today is his fourth day and Gizmo has recovered at least 95 per cent. I have learned from this and hope to save other potential Gizmo's from the same experience. Many dogs, like Gizmo, continually lick themselves after a bath and inject the bath products through their mouth and also they absorb it through open cuts.
If you've shared a similar experience, tell me.
