Cat Skin Necrosis and Seroma after Leg Amputation

Our beautiful 12 year old cat developed a horrible infection in her leg that after a course of antibiotics failed and it spread to the bone, her leg had to be amputated. 2 days post surgery we noticed her skin was starting to turn dark in several places around the incision site. 10 days post surgery nearly 3/4 of the skin, (on her belly - the side her leg was amputated) is necrotic. (At 7 days she developed a seroma.) She is checked by our vet every couple of days who is completely perplexed as to why the skin in such a large area is dying. Otherwise our cat is fine (except for being miserable with the collar) she eats, has no fever and so likely no underlying infection. I know the dead skin will eventually sluff off or will have to be surgically removed but I'm just wondering if ANYONE has ever seen anything like this after a surgery? It's absolutely horrible to look at, has a fairly bad smell and we feel absolutely sick for her. I can't find anything online. Thanks so much for any thoughts or opinions!!

Aww, poor girl! That sounds pretty horrible. Is there a veterinary specialist that your regular vet can refer you too?

Are you using anything on the skin for wound cleansing?

Many post-surgical scrubs such as Hibitane soap, Hydrogen peroxide, etc must be diluted as they are presented at full strength. If they are used full strength it may show signs of damage & scarring as it kills both the surface bacteria & the skin cells.

Re: skin necrosis and seroma

Our vet is conferring with 2 specialists through pictures and calls. The only thing we are now using on her skin is warm compresses for the seroma and granulated sugar for any open areas. That seems to dry them up much more quickly that when we left them on their own. The skin still dies in that area though. Thanks for your thoughts! We are a little lost!
