Protein % difference in dry and tinned foods

Why do dry kibble foods have 25% protein or more, and tinned foods have 10% or so?

Because canned food has about 80% water in it, which leaves 20% for the remainder of the ingredients.

To properly compare ingredients in dry food to canned food, the amounts in both the canned and the dry has to be converted to dry matter

For example if the bag of Wellness Chicken dry catfood has
As fed listed on the bag.......................converted to dry matter
Moisture 8%
Protein 36.8%....................dry matter=40% protein
Fat 18.64%.....................................=20.26% fat
Fiber 1.2%.......................................=1.3% fiber
Ash 5.85%.......................................=6.36% ash
Magnesium 0.096%............................=0.10% magnesium
Taurine 0.24%..................................=0.26% taurine

compare to:

Wellness Chicken canned catfood
as fed listed on the can..........converted to dry matter
Moisture:78%
Protein: 12.0%...............dry matter=54.54% protein
Fat: 11.0%..................................=50% fat
Fiber: 0.27%................................=1.23% fiber
Ash: 1.9%...................................=8.6% ash
Magnesium: 0.02%........................=0.09% magnesium
Taurine: 0.15%.............................=0.68% taurine

so from this example you can see the as fed (listed on bag/can) amount of protein seems higher in the dry but when you remove all moisture from both the dry & the canned you see the canned has far more protein than the dry

Growler: the above does not add up to 100%.... wet rates are about 103% and dry rates are about 115% ...... why?

Masha The numbers I listed from the Wellness website are rounded up & not 100% accurate down to the last digit that is why they don't add up to 100% plus I did not put in the Carbohydrate values.

If you add the % for every ingredient in the Wellness Canned Chicken together is comes out to a dry matter total of 328,222.98%

only the PROTEIN, FAT, CARBOHYDRATES, FIBER & ASH added together add up to 100%

I put in the values for Magnesium & Taurine as examples that other ingredients must also be converted to dry matter basis, such as when searching for the appropriate food for a cat with CRF (which I have done to great extent) the phosphorus & calcium also must be taken into consideration.

You cannot just look at the protein, fat, carbohydrate, fibre & ash values to find the appropriate food for your cat or dog alot of other ingredients must be taken in to consideration.

I have a copy of the complete Nutrient Analysis direct from Wellness & the values they list in the copy they sent me are more accurate than the website.

I put the amounts in based on what was stated on their website so if someone looked at it the would know where I got those numbers from

I'll give you the amounts on the website vs given to me:
Wellness Chicken canned catfood as fed values
from the website...............................accurate #s given to me
Moisture:not more than 78%...............................Moisture: 73.14%
Protein: 12.0%............................................. ...Protein: 12.04%
Fat: 11.0%............................................. ........Fat: 10.96%
Fiber: 0.27%............................................. ......Fiber: 0.27%
Ash: 1.9%.............................................. ........Ash: 1.85%
Carbohydrates: value not given..........................Carbohydrate: 1.74%

Magnesium: 0.02%...........................................Ma gnesium: 0.022%
Taurine: 0.15%............................................. ..Taurine: 0.015%
