Sweet Pea burnt her paws

OMG, does it never friggen end. Last night Sweet Pea jumped up on the wood stove while it was on, burnt the bottom of her feet and wrenched her leg jumping down  She can put some weight on it, but limping pretty bad.

Does anybody know what pain reliever besides metacam is safe for cats (I know the vet is going to want to give her some)?

Buprenex is a good one. It can either be injected or syringed slowly into her cheek jowl (is absorbed sublingually).

If you'd rather not go the chemical route, homeopathic arnica works quite well for pain. To help prevent infection (for her feetsies), colloidal silver has excellent anti-bacterial properties. Aloe Vera gel (not preserved with sodium benzoate) is soothing.

Oh no... ouch... poor little SweetPea! I hope she heals quickly, and isn't in too much pain. I think Traumeel is supposed to help with healing and pain too.

Oh no! Poor girl. This is my worst nightmare when I'm cooking.

I don't suppose you can put something cold on her feet to alleviate the pain?

Her pads don't look too bad, but need a vet opinion anyways as I know nothing about burns.

Her leg I really needs to be looked at though.

Oh no! Poor Sweetpea. Cats are so frustrating when they do things like that. I hope she didn't do any serious damage to her leg jumping down

A few years ago Angus burned his paws on the hot burner when he jumped up after I'd boiled the kettle. I grabbed him quickly and ran his tootsies under cold water, his pads never blistered so I must have been super fast.

Putting ointment on cats is futile, it gets smeared everywhere as they walk and then they lick the rest of it off.

The smell of burning cat fur is awful.

We are back from the vet. The xrays look good, nothing broken, thank goodness.

She has one badly burnt paw and it is the same leg that she is favouring so the vet thinks it is one of two things:

The pain from the burn or
A pulled cruti... ligament. That injury doesn't show up on the xray.

The vet didn't have any Buprenex. He has never heard of using this for pain. He could get it in but would take a few days and he thinks she is in considerable pain from the burn. Sooooo she is on a reduced dose of Metacam, for 4 days. Her bloodwork last month was very good so he is not worried about using it for 4 days.

No antibiotics unless I see open wounds, then he will prescribe some.

She is not allowed outside until her paw heals.

He may want to do some reading on it, it really is a better choice for felines. http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Con...299&A=2182&S=2

Another option is a Fentanyl pain patch, which lasts for about 5 days. All pain meds have potential for problems in cats, but these 2 are probably the safest choices. I'm sure Sweetpea will be fine on the Metacam though, since it's a small dose for a short period of time.

Thanks SCM, I'll let him know. If he had it in stock, he would have prescribed it. She can barely walk so he thought she should have some pain meds immediately. Poor girl.

I think I could have used some Buprenex yesterday

Hopefully the meds, although not the best, will help her feel better. Just means she gets a lot of extra spoiling now. Not always a bad thing.
That is one of my biggest fears too. I basically stand over the stove till it cools down.

Yup, she gets her dinner brought to her, where ever she is.

Jasper won't stop meowing at her . He wouldn't even stay outside today. He sure loves his girls.

awww poor baby sweet pea.

Sweet jasper missing her comany outside.

Did you ask about/try aloe vera? I had a really bad burn a few years back on my hand (steaming water accidently poured on) - it blistered something awful but aloe vera really helped sooth/heal it.

Onster - aloe is on the poisonous plant list for kitties.
