epileptic dog
Hi there,
I'm looking for advice here on my golden retriever, who is almost three. When we got her from someone last year she was having seizures about every six weeks (gran mal). Then, the seizures stopped--for almost a year--until this week. We thought she had outgrown them. Four days ago she had about four seizures and then they started again this morning and in six hours she had about eight seizures, lasting about two minutes each. I have no idea what brought them back. The only thing I did differently was given her some cod liver oil with her food. Could this have brought them on? So, should we be looking at medication? Have you gone to the vet yet? What did they say?

You NEED to go to the vet and have bloodwork done.I'm not a pro on the subject but had a foster with epilepsy (golden) he was on meds and didn't have any seizure as long as he was on his meds. They need to be tested twice a year. It's not that expensive either.I wouldn't wait if I was you,you could loose your dog if a seizure last too long.If a seizure last longer than 15 minutes, you have to bring your dog to the animal hospital A.S.A.P.

Dog don't grow out of having seizures, they become more often and harder on the dog if left untreated. Please go to your Vet and have a complete bloodwork done, Blaze my golden does have epilepsy and started with seizures in Dec. We went 13 week without a seizure and now down to 3 weeks and had 2 in one day only 3 hours apart.. that is bad.
Wed when Blaze had his 2 seizures he went to the Vets that night, he is now on PB and we hope it help. Please don't just wait and see if more seizures are too follow, you can be sure there will be more and it's sad but never know when. The dog can be hurt or hurt anyone or anything around them while in a seizure of just coming out ( which can take along time) the first part you say 2 mintues is only that the first part Lots goes on after they wake up too. Again don't wait! I wish you well. |

Definately go to the vet asap, I had a dog with seizures and the medications did wonders. Kept them under control, and for the dog to be having that many in such a short period of time it is dangerous, you dont want the dog to go into "status eplepticus" (spelling) that is a seizure that can kill them. (too long of a seizure) the dogs body temperature rises when in a seizure.
Once again, Please take the dog to the vet, asap.
