Actually...

Actually it's
1. standart shnauzers.
My family owned one when I was a child and it was very loyal and very bold dog. I sort of respected him.
2.GSD's
I always wanted to own one
3.Airdale terriers
My grandparents had one when I was a baby and I learned to walk holding on to it's tail ;-) Actualy my mother said I was the only person he suffered to be so familiar with him Also I really like how they look. Generally I like terriers...
Well, now I have a Husky But I wouldn't call it my favorite as a breed

I don't see many small/toy breeds on the lists of faves.... but I do love:

1 - Havanese (since we just got our first!)
2 - Great Dane (never will own one, but I do love them)
3 - Setters

2) Dogue De Bordeaux..I sooooo love them and plan on owning one some day. Technically a Mastiff too.. but oh well.
3) Mastiffs... My favs are Neos, I love the wrinkles. LOL

I enjoy and love a lot of breeds but for different reasons. though I like certain breeds a lot realize they are not for me as a pet

I love the shepherd for it's ease of training and picking up commands.

I enjoy many of members of the sighthound family for quiet and easy going natures and love the beauty and power of their speed, if could I would love to adopt a saluki for their graceful looks a sloughi and Azawakhs which I find to be beautifully built more angular than a greyhound, or the Peruvian Inca Orchid, which I know will never happen, as there are only around a 1000 in existence which is a hairless south American sighthound

And though the Chinese crested is not a sighthound it was the peruvian inca that got me into looking at chinese cresteds and that lead to the adoption of Winnie

Sighthounds like the afghan are often referred to as being brainless, but the its the criteria we use to measure intelligence that causes them to score low It would be much like us going to university for 5 years to study biology and then be given a test in relativity, we are not going to score high because that is not what we were trained in

the intelligence ratings are based based on the ease to train and follow commands which most working breeds will score very high , but sighthounds were not bred to work hand in hand with man they were bred to work independantly and think for themselves to do their job without any human intervention, so using the criteria of following commands is going cause them to score low, because if they see no purpose or end benefit to themselves they will reason it is not worth doing so they simply give you the dumb confused look and walk away , that does not make them stupid, if fact it makes them much more like humans in that regard , because they are not going to do something simply to make us happy there has to be something in it for them as well.

very true OG! the same can be said of akitas... they are superbly intelligent but *not* very trainable as other working breeds, ie they are quick learners but doing the same repetive tasks bores them and, being stubborn, often shuts the door to them having "jobs". they were bred to hunt in pairs, away from humans, so independant thinking and autonomy are bred deep into the genes. you throw a ball and they will fetch it once, twice, maaaybe three times... and they they look at you and go "well that's pointless! YOU go fetch the ball!" of course there are exceptions, some akitas are avid retrievers, some have Obedience titles, many do well in agility, tracking, etc, but in general... nope! but don't let that fool you, eh? akitas are creepily smart and most have a wicked sense of humor, LOL!

If I HAVE to pick only 3:
1) English Setter (go figure)
2) Bearded Collie
3) Wheaten Terrier X Bearded Collie (my sister has this mix and he's AMAZING)

Of course, I'd also like to add Aussies, Border Collies, Rotties, Whippets, Boxers, Goldens, Westies, Cairns, Am Staffs and many many others to the list.

There's so many good beautiful dogs in the world, its hard to really choose.

I so agree with that. There isn't one dog breed that I don't like. The owners, on the other hand, are a different story.

Mini Dachshunds - with Super Alpha (but benevolent) temperaments.

(No offence meant to our current pup, a wonderful American Eskimo - but my heart belongs to mini Dachshunds)

I'd sooner see myself with 3 danes (aaaah, you can always dream, lol), rather then a tiny toy breed. Not that they aren't wonderful dogs , don't want to offend anyone, just not for me!

Well Sars and Caucasians are cousin flockguards, performing similar functions in different countries. I prefer the Caucasian character from the Sars I've seen.

Leonbergers are a modern mixed breed of Great Pyrenees and other breeds, developed for companionship. They do not guard.

Okay I've been away for the weekend so I missed this post altogether, this is really quite a hard one, I like many breeds but I do not ever see myself owning some of them, but unlike the rest of you there are some breeds I would never own. Here are my likes
Big ones first:
1) I of course LOVE mastiffs, that's just a given but if I had to 'pick' just one of the many different - Black Adronicus Mastiff (I've never owned a blk dog before)
2) Smooth coated Saint Bernard
3)and yes add me to the list of Great Dane (Boston/Mantle, Blue)

I think if maybe I'll break the rules with the little ones though, because smaller means you can have more - right?
1) French Bulldog (some day )
2) Pug
3) Chi's (love them)
4) Boston Terrier
5) Beagle
I just love them smooshy faces, the more wrinkles the better

(I'm boxer to the end tho I think. )

Saw a really pretty boxer the other day. Sitting calmly in the back seat of a car at the grocery--waiting patiently for his/her person and watching the world.

I've had two Great Danes in my life. One was a wonder dog, the other wasn't, never bonded and I rehomed her. My male was one of those dogs who bonds so closely that his life literally revolves around his person--he was easy to train and control, totally trustworthy in the home and with children, and a joy to be around. He was the best dog I've ever had or probably will ever have. I've said it before in this forum, the only bad thing about Danes is that they are shockingly short lived. They are in their prime to about age 6 and at 7 start to decline into old age. At 10 or 11 years, they're gone, it's heartbreaking!

Danes are among my favorite dogs.

I love my Standard Poodle, there are no negatives to having Standards around.

I guess my third favorite is the "mongrel." Mixed breeds are no less wonderful companions than the fanciest of pedigreed breeds. I know (and have known) mixed breed dogs that I'd adopt in a New Yawk minute. I guess any happy, healthy, friendly dog (no matter what size) is a joy--and that's what it's all about.

Angie got groomed again yesterday and Jimmy the Corgy/Pom mix was there--one of my favorite 'someone elses' dog! Such a character!

Ditto!
I think if Nic would let me have a dane, I'd get one though....maybe an older one in rescue (there's one on petfinder I'm absolutely in love with!! Plus one of her pictures, she's lying down with a boxer )
When we decided to get a dog, Nic gave me a coupon that said 'GOOD FOR ONE DOG!' and one of the conditions, types reeeeeally small at the bottom of the coupon was : 'this coupon is not valid for danes, newfs, st-bernards, or any other dog that poops bigger than Nic'

lol that's funny. I'm glad I didn't get one of those. I don't want it anywhere in writing that I'm only allowed one (or two) dogs.
