Exclamation Royal Canin RECALL

I just received a phone call from my vet's clinic asking me to immediately stop feeding my dog Penny the Royal Canin SS (Skin Support) I began feeding her last month because of her skin problems! The clinic recommended doing a blood/urine test that will be covered by Royal Canin. Oh man, I thought we were safe...

I found this: http://www.royalcanin.ca/index_en.php

I also just found Goldengal's post. This recall is not limited to the USA, it includes Canada too.

What do I feed Penny now? Our appointment for the tests is only on Tuesday afternoon.

The vet thought that it may have either been demodectic mange or just a bad reaction to the switch I had made to Canidae All Life Stages. She was molting and going bald in spots and had excessively dry skin (no scratching). She also lost some weight shortly after the switch. She was treated with Revolution, just in case, and we then started to feed her the Royal Canin SS, which has been about a month now.

Well, from their site:

Quote:
NUTRITIONAL DIFFERENCES
(as compared to typical commercial pet foods)
Limited ingredients
Menhaden fish meal
Single carbohydrate source (rice)
Enhanced levels of vitamin A, vitamin C, taurine, and zinc
Enriched with biotic, niacin, pantothenic acid, and linoleic acid
Enriched with long chain omega-3 fatty acids (eicosapantaenoic and docosahexanoic acids)
Curcumin
Aloe Vera gel
So IMO, all they want is limited ingredients and fish. To me, that would be Barking at the Moon, Canidae Lamb and Rice+ a fish oil supplement, California natural Herring, or maybe one of the Wellness allergy formulas, but they don't have a fishy one...

Solid Gold Barking at the Moon
California Natural Herring

Well, I have plenty of Canidae Lamb & Rice here. I was planning on starting a switch in a couple of weeks for her but was a little reluctant wondering if there was something in the All Life Stages she may have been allergic to and if it would be found in the Lamb & Rice as well. What kind of fish oil and where would I find it?

If you're near woofers (oh, wait- you're on the south shore... I don't know who would have it on the south shore...) they have a great one that I use. It's Biologic Vet fats. It's a little pricey, but one or two squirts on the food twice a day is usually enough. It lasts my two 2 months or more and it's a blend of oils, not just salmon oil... Or you can just buy salmon oil capsules.

So what time are you coming tomorrow?

Thanks for your help Prin; it's very much appreciated.

Well, if I'm seeing somebody who is seeing you, I could give them a half a bottle or something to tide you over...

Woofers is in the west island.. Nutriville in Laval had it, but I think I bought the last bottle... They're ordering more for sure. I don't know when they'll get it.

Otherwise just go to a pharmacy and get salmon oil capsules.

Thank you. I'm going to try calling around here to see if anyone carries Vet Fats. Ugh, just when I wanted to take a much needed nap.

LuckyPenny,

Call the place in Westmount, if they have it, I can pick it up for you before I go home. I will leave it at my parents house tomorrow morning and you can pick it up from them.

Coconut oil might help too. It would kill all the yeasties if it's a yeasty problem.

I haven't been able to find the BioFats anywhere on the South Shore so far nor in Westmount. Thanks for the offer Poodletalk. I might have to take you up on your offer Prin until I can make my way to Laval. I called the company to see if they had a list of local retailers but the person responsible won't be back until Monday.

So, I'll just get some salmon oil for the next few days. Can I add coconut oil as well? Also, I have to switch her over like immediately; I can't do it gradually. I already add probiotics and digestive enzymes in the morning and Solid Gold Seameal and digestive enzymes in the evening to their food. Now if I add the oils + a new food altogether, I guess Penny will have quite the stomach upset, eh? Poor thing. I'm a little worried for her now but take some comfort that she has not been on the Royal Canin for an extensive amount of time. I should have known better, though. I was just a little panicky regarding her skin and was easily talked into it

I would fast them for 24 hours and then give them 1/2 a meal of new stuff without anything on it and see how that goes. If it's soft, that's ok, but if it's diarrhea, it could be a problem. I'd wait a little anyway before adding the supplements to it, just to make sure she adjusts well to the new food. Salmon oil capsules are just fine though. No need to rush out for the fats...

Coconut oil you can add later too.

So far so good with Penny. Her stool is still good with the sudden switch. I picked up some organic coconut oil (it looks like lard ) and I'm having the BioFats delivered to my workplace this week from Laval. Now that's what I call customer service . I'll slowly start to add them to her meals next week. Thanks for the help Prin. Otherwise, I'd still be standing in front of the shelves of dog food hyperventilating by now .

Chico, supposedly (according to the company) it's ok for cats. Salmon oil capsules would be ok too.
