are wolf hybrids legal in Canada?

I want to get some more information on the laws here in Canada, specifically in Ontario. I am not looking to breed or acquire but only want to know if it is illegal to possess as a pet a wolf/husky hybrid dog. I am in northern Ontario. I know many states in the US they are legal. What about in Canada?

I thought in BC it was illegal to adopt out wolf hybrid dogs, but I saw one the Nelson BC SPCA site so I am not sure.(He got adopted yeah!) Not sure how these dogs come about though I cant imagine someone intentionally breeding them.

I hope I never see a wolfadoodle !.

My girlfriends wolf/husky just passed away last week. She aquired hers in Saskatchewan and is going to look for a new one there. Seems her father in law has connection to a breeder. Hers was legal as far as i know.Went to the vet was chipped and so forth. She is in Airdrie and never had any problems.

Im pretty sure they are...theres quite a few in downtown Toronto, they claim they are wolfXHuskys anyway. There is one in my neighbourhood, hes a beautiful dog, and plays pretty nicely with my dog. If they arent legal, its one of those things no one cares about anyways cause they don't look like pit bulls!

They should be worried about hybrids. Anytime ya have a half or quarter or 1/8 wild animal in a home you're dealing with an unknown.

I was told by Agriculture Canada that indeed they are illegal to breed/sell. I was also told there is no way to prove that the dog is a true wolf hybrid. I know that many people selling them out there don't know for sure if they are truly wolf hybrids.

I have heard of some breeders up north for these dogs so it must be legal. Not that I would recommend them as pets for a person that doesn't know what they are doing, very head strong dogs.

It's not legal. There was a person in the Thunder Bay area who had all the so-called wolf hybrids taken away. I think you can check with the Ministry of Natural Resources to confirm.

Just because people do it does NOT mean it's legal, people smoke pot too, but it's not legal!!!

I called Agriculture Canada again and it's NOT legal.

I have known so many people with wolf/dog crosses.
Its no as uncommon as people may think.
Commonly this happens in wooded areas where people
dont get their female dogs fixed, and the female gets out
with the wolves and gets pregnant.
It is usually not intended.
I have known a great many of these dogs, and
they were not aggressive, hostile, or anything. They were
very very alert, very intelligent, a bit aloof, but no "wild animal".
Keep in mind that wolves are not the dangerous "wild animal"
people tend to think they are. Wolves are caring parents, very social,
very intelligent, and not any more aggressive than any other related dog
breed.

I am glad you have had good experiences, I have not and don't think wild animals should mix with domestic. Too many people have been hurt and there are too many irresponsible people who would be atttracked to such dogs. Not worth it IMO.

Lol, so is it ilegal if it is not enough to smoke , I'm just kidding, I think I know what you mean over a certain amount it becomes intent to sell so as long as you only have small quantity it is legal.

It's NOT legal, small personal amount of pot is tolerated, only because it's a waste of the cops, courts and jailers time. It's not officially legal in Canada!! I have a few cops in the family. I think somwone's been smokin too much...

Keep in mind, that not that long ago all our four legged companions
were a lot closer to wolves than we could even imagine.
People even keep such breeds as Canaan Dogs, Pariah Dogs, and New Guinea Singing Dogs as pets, and such breeds are essentially, just as "wild" as the wolves you are naming.
Perhaps some more reading, research, and openmindedness would allow you to see these "wild animals" as the wonderful, kind, intelligent, and not so very different from our own chihuahuas, chow chows, and german sheperds as we seem to think they are.
Remember, in the beginning of Dog Domestication, it was NOT the human who sought the wolf out, but the Wolf who chose to grace us with his companionship, and 6 million years of this companionship has led to dogs being the most common domestic animal worldwide.

I am well aware of the close relationship wolves and dogs have, and I have worked with quite a few primative breeds, that being said I still don't think we need wolf dogs in our communities. I know two lovely dogs that were killed by wolf dogs, many children have been killed and yes many domestic dogs have killed children as well. As per usual it's not always responsible people seeking out such dogs.

I have met and spent time with wolf dogs, doesn't mean I don't like them, I do find them quite facinating, as I do many different dogs, I just don't think they are appropriate 'pets' for the average dog owner. Either way in Canada they are illegal I didn't make that law but I do respect it and understand why it's there.

I am not as ignorant as you peg me to be but I am a realist and reality is most people aren't responsible enought to keep these dogs nor are they legally allowed to. I have a very dear friend who spent two years with wolves, and I have learned a great deal from her and a have a great respect for wolves as well have spent some time with her watching a pack which is probably why I feel they should be left in the wild, where they belong.

I have heard in the news I think it was a while back that having any mixed animal with a wild animal such as a wolf is not legal. It caought my attention becasue I have a pixie bob which is cross with a bobcat. but this has happened naturally though time. So I would assume that wolf/huskys are not.

Did anyone ever stop to think that the mild mannered dogs that their friends have and claim are wolf crosses, might actually be husky crosses? Did anyone see the wolf mate the _______ (fill in the name of the mix here) in the back yard? And exactly how far out in the wilderness do they live because wolves, healthy ones at least, are not big fans of the human race and stay as far away from us and everything about us as possible.

As far as trapping wolves to mate them to dogs to produce pets, well that's just wrong IMO

Ofcourse Petfriendly, I was and am skeptical about this husky the one that lives in my neighborhood being crossed with a wolf, he doesn't look or seem to behave out of the ordinary, but i have definately seen ones in downtown Toronto that look just like wolves, they don't look like Huskys. The story around about this particular husky is that he was owned by a native woman somehere far up north and happened to have a romantic encounter with a wild wolf...thats what I was told by the present owner, anyway the woman became very ill and the present owner adopted the wolf-husky and now he lives in the city.

I would be willing to put a fairly decent wager on the dog not being part wolf. Now I'm not nature specialist, but there are supposedly wolves where my parents live (bush country eastern Ontario) and in the 25 years I was there, I never saw nor heard one dead or alive. I find it hard to believe that a first generation cross would be able to stand being in the City. I think its an urban legend... I've seen many a dog that resembles a wolf but that's where it ended, in the resemblance.

LOL I always think wolf crosses are husky crosses. The French here call huskies wolves all the time.
