What about....
On other forums that i am active with they have a " mark all topics read" option in each subforum. I like this feature, after i have read through the posts that interest me I like to " mark all topics read" it just kinda makes it easier to "clean up" Not all members would use it but I like the option!!
Just a suggestion !
