Seeking alternative to T/D Prescription Diet for Cats and Dogs
I am seeking an alternative, more natural product to replace the T/D Prescription Diet for Cats and also the T/D Prescription Diet for Dogs which I use additionally to my pets diets. Because of the large, hard round type of kibble and the special formula - it is supposed to keep their teeth in good shape. But, I was wondering if there exists anything very similar that someone could suggest to use rather than giving my pets food with chemicals.
Thank you! |

It's great that you want to get away from feeding the T/D. My suggestion for your cat (how old is s/he?), would be to stop feeding kibble period, and either look for a good quality canned food and/or consider a raw diet. For dental health, chewing on raw chicken necks or wing-tips would be the healthiest. Otherwise, you might have to try brushing your cats teeth (I know ). Here is an excellent video put out by Cornell University on how to go about that process: http://partnersah.vet.cornell.edu/pe...brushing_teeth
And some info on feline nutrition: www.catinfo.org

Still seeking alternative replacement for T/D Prescription Diet
I am STILL seeking an alternative, more natural product > to replace the T/D Prescription Diet for Cats and also the T/D Prescription Diet for Dogs, which I use - additionally to my pets diets. Because of the large, hard, round shaped-type of kibble, and the special formula - it is supposed to keep their teeth in good shape, and so far I am very pleased ....but, I do NOT feel comfortable to support this company. I do not like giving my pets food with chemicals. I live in Montreal, so if there is anyone who knows of any other products available here, that are very similar to the T/D... I would be VERY appreciative.! Thanks!
Sugarcatmom: I appreciate your opinion and suggestions - but - for this particular situation, I must continue with a diet/recipe which I have had to invent (after much trial and error) - cooking for them plus a combination of several ingredients/foods, etc., that I have had to develop myself, as these particular rescues each have very specific needs as they are ill, etc etc....(too long to describe). The T/D is NOT their meal, only additionally - used as a sprinkle on top of their meals, or as a treat, as a prevention program for their teeth. Quote:

Well, like I said, chicken necks would be the most "natural" teeth cleaner. But if that's not an option, you could look at C.E.T Chews or Enzadents. They're shaped like wine corks and use enzymes to help keep tartar at bay. They're cheaper if you get them online rather than at the vet.
Ah okay. As long as you know (in the cat's case particularly) that all the nutrients are properly balanced. Cats have a much narrower range of nutritional requirements than dogs and there isn't a lot of room for error. For instance, the calcium/phosphorus ratio is extremely important and something that too many people overlook when making their own food. Also, if you're cooking the food, it needs additional taurine added since cooking destroys taurine. You might already know all this, but thought I'd mention it just in case......

Still seeking alternative replacement for T/D Prescription Diet
Thanks! I thought that the C.E.T Chews/Enzadents, had chemicals in them?
And when you mentioned chicken necks - are you suggesting cooked or raw? I am quite paranoid because a lady I know was not careful and her dog died in front of her eyes, because she gave him cooked chicken bones - so, I feel frightened about bones! (p.s. Their diets are a mixture.....cooked foods combined with top quality holistic dry food, some have slippery elm, etc. etc...quite a combination specifically prepared, for each of them - pertaining to their particular ailments! and I am proud to say they are "stable" right now! phew!) One little dog I rescued, came from a place where she was abused, beaten and kept in a cage, and fed only sugar laden "milk bones", a product which some use as a treat...but they fed it to her as food.....so it has taken me several years of working with her, as she has quite a sensitive digestive system, prone to pain and diarrhea and constipation.....Thank goodness, at the moment she is stable...my fingers remain crossed! Well sugarcatmom pretty much covered your kitties (she's the resident kitty nutrition expert IMO)
As for your dogs, I honestly think brushing their teeth every day, or at least several times a week, is the singlemost effective way to maintain dental health. You can find natural, enzymatic dog toothpaste at good pet boutiques/nutrition centres. Another good option is RAW meaty bones, such as knuckle bones, that you can get from butchers. Best used outside and keep in mind they could cause fights between dogs. If you're not comfortable with the bones, I've found that chewing on sticks is incredibly effective for teeth-cleaning Finally, my dogs like to enjoy thses "dentabones" from time to time. Good ingredients....but should definately supervise their use. http://www.zukes.com/woof/z-ridge.html
