Question What is the best house snake to get?

I really want a snake but I don't know what kind to get and what size! Is it even a good idea to get one? How offen do you need to feed a snake? Do you need to take them out of the cage much? how big is a medium sized snake?

Lauren - I don't think now is a good time for you to think about getting a snake. You are still learning to be responsible about looking after your kitten. What would you do if you forgot to feed your snake and he got out and went after your kitten? Maybe do a LOT of research and reading about snakes and their habits before thinking about getting one. That would be a great start.

Most snakes are live feeders. Once you get bigger then the little bitty snakes - you are looking at feeding live pinkies - baby mice. It generally isn't pretty and they need to be fed at least once a week.

Just so you know.

Most good snake keepers feed frozen/thawed (F/T), there is no reason for the general herp keeper to feed live. Most snakes have no troubles eating F/T, and if you buy from a reputable breeder, they will most likely already be eating f/t (if not, find another breeder).

It depends on the species as for the size and feeding requirements. Reptiles certainly can not be lumped into a general box, you need to do some serious researching and reading and studying and talking with herp owners before you even consider getting a reptile. They are not cuddly creatures like a kitten or bunny, they are not even considered domesticated (with the exception of the corn snake and ball python, I believe).

Search for reptile-specific forums and start reading. When you think you've found what you love, research some more. Care for these animals means caring for their every need, not just what you think is good enough (this means an appropriate habitat, feeding routine, heating and humidity, health care, etc).

Owning herps can be very rewarding, but also very expensive and heartbreaking at times. Personally when I kept reptiles, I ended up breeding my own feeders and investing in a home CO2 Chamber (to euthy the prey before they were fed). In the years I kept herps, I literally spent thousands of dollars on their care (including driving to and from a specialist herp vet in another city). It's not a simple undertaking by any means.

To be honest,I never understood why people would chose to have snakes as pets,it always saddens me when I see a beautiful snake living in a smallish glass-cage.
Snakes to me,belong in the wild, unless you are an expert at caring for snakes, know how to cater to their every need..even so,I don't think it's right.

LaurenD,judging by your questions,I think this is more of a whim,an idea for you and not a good one, sorry

Hi Lauren, I had reptiles and fish. And believe me it is more work than you think. There is a vegetarian lizard but you must keep fresh food all the time.

Gotta agree that snakes and reptiles are a lot of work, and on top of that not every vet is equipped to deal with them if they become ill. I'd venture into this very carefully and maybe first find a mentor who can show you the ropes (good and bad) before you take anything on. This can be a very $$$$ hobby, plus if you are renting somewhere and have to move are you going to be able to bring a snake? Not in my basement suite you won't

Hey folks, Lauren hasn't been on since she posted this back in Sept. I don't think she was going to be able to get a snake any time soon. Or at least I hope not.

Hopefully not! Regardless, if anyone is searching for info here, at least they got a bit of information from experienced keepers
