My Pal Stinky

Well our nightly visitor came by while I was outside today and didn't even care I was there. Often glanced up to look at me and sorta nodded like 'hey whats up' then back to devouring the bird seed or what have you on the ground.

Very fluffy and cute, I love my pal Stinky!!

LOL Luba! That's too cute! I remember once walking out late at night at my parents' cabin in the country and sleepily petting one of their cats for a good two or three minutes before I realized it was actually one of Stinky's cousins.... EEP. I'm glad they're not quite as trigger-happy as we're often told they are.

Yes yes - I did Luba. All I can figure is he was eating out of the catfood bowl at the time... and the food must have tasted soooo good that he didn't mind a pet or two from a crazy human. Now when we used to mistake the opossums for the kitties -- that's another thing entirely.. MAN do those things get scary when crossed!!!!

I LOVE your pictures, Luba. You've got the whole visit documented! How'd you get so lucky as to get these things to come out in the dark anyway??

Luba, that is so cute...we have a couple coming at night(late)I think they are mom and a baby and they too eat birdseeds on the ground.
I only watch them from the window, with a big flashlight, which they don't seem to mind.My resident coon kind of takes the long way around them
There is lots to see out there, soo much better than TV...
Here's a very old pic of me and a wee skunk,he was rescued and turned in to a pet...I do not approve, but boy was he cute!! An awful pic of me,by the way,but just look at the skunk

I use a bright flash then brighten them up on computer software, if I dont they are very dark and you can't see very much.
I still can't believe a wild skunk just let you pat it Pags thats amazing!! What a nice memory.

Anita is that really a lil skunky in you hands oh wow what a site what a site, thats so beautiful!

I"m glad that I'm not the only one that loves these little stinkies I find them very sweet actually.

I remember a rabid skunk once as a kid the poor thing was so sick it was snarly and yet fatigued walking down our driveway almost like it was searching for help, didn't know what was wrong with it.

We had animal control come out to put him to sleep, it was so very sad
He looked so helpless like he was crying out to us HELP ME HELP ME!

Yes,that is a real skunk, still a bit smelly, but he had been descented(is there such a word?)he lived for many years until one day he got sick and was pts.Not mine though,he was taken care of by friends of ours on a big property in Cambridge, after they found him on the road with a dead mom.
I LOVE all animals,in my view they all have a purpose and a right to live.Stinky or not

Yeah Luba,it was a good thing they did,but unfortunately they kept him mostly as a conversation-piece,not so much because they loved him..
He grew up inside the house, but once he got older was kept in a pen outside and eventually got sick...and was pts

Awww sorry Buuba  We have long since ended any friendship with them, they were also in to fox-hunting the traditional ugly English way and kept about 20 hounds in a small kennel.Oh well, that's a whole other story!!

Aw. That's horrible, chico! I just don't understand people sometimes.. (read: most of the time).

And as for me and my wild animal encounters... I swear I don't know what it is about me but one of my college bio professors used to send me out as bait when we were out in the field because inevitably curious critters would come sniff at me. (I put my foot down when he asked me to do this on a herpetology trip...)

If you look around on the net, there are a lot of people who now have pets as skunks...there are all sorts. Personally, I have enough to handle with my ferrets, skunks would just be too much.

Pags,I don't think it's so much that wild critters are drawn to us,but we SEE them because we look around us.
People watching TV at night, have no idea of all the creatures visiting their backyard at night. It's like"look and you shall find"
Of course in my case,it helps that I feed them
When we go to S Carolina,I check every flowering bush, for different butterflies, hummingbirds etc...there are lots,I walk around with my camera and people think I am just a bit nutter, taking pics of bushes..
We love animals and we notice them, while many people have blinders on,or they are just not interested,to me it's a priviledge to watch a wild animal,in the wild.

That's so true, chico! I'm totally in awe of nature - and you can find me scanning every leaf and branch and blade of grass when I go out too... And listening for the little sounds as well. I am definitely usually more aware than most people when I'm out there. Uh although some of the critters -- such as the cat-food-eating skunk catch me off guard when they're in unexpected places so close to where we humans are raising a ruckus.

I also don't go stomping through the woods like I'm a drunk teenager on a day-shopping trip at the mall. I try so hard to teach my kids to show some respect when they're out there -- you know trying to teach them that they're guests in the animals' homes. Frustrating - I don't think they've ever actually SEEN any of the wildlife they could have encountered. As a matter of fact - they just spent a week in the Adirondacks and we're told that a couple of days ago they scared the hooey out of a little black bear that THEY NEVER EVEN SAW. Sigh. Everyone else saw the little fella -- and they also saw him take off running when he heard my boys coming. I keep telling myself they are young and they will learn ... but... yeesh....

If my boys had encountered your pal Stinky, Luba.. I'd be bathing them in tomato juice at this very moment.
