Recording a cell phone conversation

I have a phone call coming in on Wednesday, it would be nice to be able to record both sides of the conversation without the other person knowing. It's with a company regarding the toxicology info about recall food.

What I have is: cell phone - built in voice recorder is only 1 min long, voice mail but I can't remember if/how to do it & how long I can record a conversation without the other person knowing, then I would have to get it from the vm box to the comp

I have a headset for the phone w/earpiece & microphone but once you plug it in you can't hear/talk into the actual phone it all funnels through the headset (doesn't fit in the computer's jack)

My phone has speaker phone function but I find you never hear the other person clearly or they can't hear you loud enough

My laptop has Windows Voice Recorder, and built-in microphone & speakers, I have headphones for the computer (doesn't fit in the phone's jack)

I know how to use the voice recorder to record sound coming from the computer (ie music playing on comp) and it will record sound from me talking/from the room so it will record my side of the conversation but..

how to get the other side of the convo???

any ideas without spending any money??

Growler, being the technology twit that I am, I don't have a clue how to help you.

So, I'm just bumping this up cuz I'm sure someone else here will give you some advise.

One of my co-workers told me she went to The Source (previously Radio Shack) and bought a gaget that she plugs in that records calls. She uses it for our Education Sessions.

Said it wasn't expensive.

Yep, I have one that I bought at Radio Shack (or whatever it is now) .. it's pretty cheap, and it works decently - but you might have to turn up the volume on your phone pretty high to get decent levels - and there might be some fuzzy background noise..

(FYI I'm not a super sleuth, or anything - I needed it for one of my broadcasting classes )

You can use skype ( skype.com ) to phone people from your computer for very cheap. You can also use skype to record phone conversations. The quality isn't perfect and it isn't always 100% reliable - but it's decent.

Try these links http://skypetips.internetvisitation....ype_calls.html
http://www.prettymay.net/ - this one is free i think

Hazelrunpack was having trouble posting this morning so she emailed me this:

This method of recording a phone call may work for you--but practice it at least once to make sure it works with your phone:

Do you have a digital recorder? Or know someone who can lend you one?

Set your phone on some sort of cradle...or stand it upright on the table. It just needs to be propped up so that if the speaker is on the back, you can still get a digital recorder near the back to record the answers. Put it somewhere that makes it possible for you to get your face close to it so the guy can hear your questions and you can hear the replies...and the recorder can catch it all. (You'll be a little cramped from bending over by the end...set it up so you can at least sit on a chair.)

When the guy calls, start the recorder and answer your phone using the speaker phone feature.

Don't stop the recorder until the guy actually hangs up...I once missed something impt because I thought the guy was winding down and turned off the recorder prematurely. pftuiiiiiiii

There are no beeps to give away the fact that the convo is being recorded.

This has always worked well for me (I use it all the time when talking to sleezy politicians or govt administrators). And as far as I know, it's legal. In WI, at least, if you're a part of the convo, you can legally record it, even if the other party doesn't know. Can't use it in court, but you can attest to the conversation in court and you can produce the tape to back up your recollections if someone challenges.

Good luck! And please pray for my phone lines! LOL
I think I'll try this, using the sound recorder program on my comp, just have to play with where to prop up the phone

Thanks for the suggestions

Good luck, Growler......I hope it works.

Just make sure that Duffy can't jump up and knock over your propped up phone.

It wasn't to be used in court or as blackmail or anything like that . Basically as a reference for me to refresh my memory about statements that were made etc.

Anyways it didn't really work right off the bat he was complaining he couldn't hear me so I had to switch speaker phone off & just typed short hand notes to what he said. None of which was all that useful to me "this is how we do things now" as compared to before the recall etc bunch of company praise blah blah blah etc

Sorry it didn't work but since it was just company mumbo jumbo then it wasn't much of a loss. Did he at least listen to anything you had to say or was it like talking to a politician.

I've never had the "pleasure" of speaking to a politician, but yeah I'd say something like that. More my asking questions about the testing, toxins, source of ingredients, nothing really helpful
