We had babies!!!!!!

For those of you who don't know, we have 2 Giant African Land Snails. They are almost 3 years old, and have only laid one egg since we've had them as tiny snails themselves. As I was cleaning their tank today, I found 3 hatched snails and one egg!!! I was EXSTATIC!!! Definately 2 snails are alive, the other I'm not 100% sure yet, and I doubt the egg will hatch. I've been waiting for this for a long time!!!! Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!! They are so cute compared to the adults we have!

here is a pic of Kaimah & Kamau, the adults! For those of you who don't know, snails are hermaphrodites, they have both male and female sex organs, but you need two to mate. Pretty cool stuff - can't wait to tell my students on Monday!!!!

cool, . congradulations. I'm happy for you, but I'm not much for snails. I love snakes and pretty much all reptiles, but no snails, worms, or slugs. They gross me out. But i'm glad you got some new babies.

Congratulations. This may sound silly but what exactly do you do with these snails? Pardon my ignorance but I've never heard of someone having snails as a pet?

Catt,congrats....although snails are probably not very cuddly and I would have to protect them from my Hubbies french apetite( )I can understand why you get excited,I don't find them yucky, everything has it's beauty, except for the centerpedes now invading my house

Hahahahh - you guys are funny!! Snails are actually pretty cool pets - they aren't very cuddly, but they are neat to watch! They are really no different than owning fish - you just watch them. We have several other "reptile-like" critters and when we saw these baby snails at a reptile show, I fell in love with them!!! My main thought when we first got them was for my classroom, but I liked them too much! I think I will take the new babies to my classroom now!! When we got them I was teaching Gr.2 and there is a Science unit on creepy crawlies, and it fit perfectly! Now I teach Gr. 3 and we do a unit on Animal Life Cycles, so it still fits!!! See, Jackie, and I have a hard time with snakes!!!!

Luba Booba - what am I going to do with you girl?? tee heeee!!! They would be pretty "tough" to eat, being so big...yuck!!!

Thanks everyone!!!
