The coming of winter

Very frosty weekend in the Calgary area . . . .

Abby and Keeper on Sunday morning found this scene at their home . . . .

Below, Keeper walks our fenceline . . . .

Below, later in the day, Abby was walking in the forest . . .

the snow is gone now and it was a balmy but windy Tuesday with the forecast for another deep freeze imminently. A week and a half ago, it was a freaky 36 C or about 96 F on the thermometer.

Winter is near.

the previous week, Keeper and Abby were lakeshore exploring in southwestern Alberta

Prescribed forest fire burns in the mountains led to a fiery sunset

Below, Abby was up at Elbow Lake in K-Country where the thermometer was below zero and there was a thin sheen of ice on the lake in the background . . . . but a beautiful day for walking as the larch pines were starting to turn colour.

Another wet day below and Abby has settled down in a nest of green to chew on a deer hoove she has found . . . . .

. . . . . but Ruthless Rick keeps her moving so she tires of her prize and drops it . . . . .

Wet, wet, wet . . . . and mysterious!!!

I was using a Nikon D80 with an 18-70 zoom and/or a 70-300mm zoom.

Generally, the 18-70 mm is a good walking around lense.

Hopefully, this weekend we'll have some sunshine to go hunting larch pines in the snowy mountains like this shot from two Octobers ago.

Thanks for all your comments.

Amazing photos

Are you a professional photographer? The way your dogs stand out in your pictures is incredible. I take hundreds of photos of my dogs and some of them are pretty good if I do say so myself, but nothing like yours.

No. . . . . . a quarter century ago . . . . yes. Thank you for your comments.

Some shots from this afternoon in yet more fresh snow southwest of Calgary . . . below, Keeper listens in the forest . . .

Below, the sun-dappled forest . . .

Below, Keeper goes crazy as she's happy to be home . . . . . the snow is so early many of the leaves haven't even turned gold yet, let alone fallen to the ground.

Your photos are amazing Rick. I especially love the mountain scene, with the two dogs in the woods. Beautiful!

It looks like you had more snow on the ground in your area than we did! Nothing has stayed long enough to take any photos of the dogs in it. I'm actually looking forward to winter this year though...

Great pics!

Rick your pics and your dogs are beautiful!

I just looked out the patio door here and we have as much snow as u did in your pics....I'm not ready! It wasn't suppose to happen here until Wednesday! Waaa The leaves aren't off our trees either but I'm hoping it won't stay long. It wouldn't be so bad if I had beautiful scenery to look at like our in your pictures.

Hey, we're just a little south of Calgary but at a higher altitude so maybe that makes a difference in snow cover.

Earlier today, it's minus nine celcius at Chain Lakes as Keeper stops to sniff something significant before crossing the dam in the background.

Below, Keeper gets ambushed by "Stray Dog." (Pardon the snow on the lense).

This exuberant 8-month old dog arrived with a fisherman gentleman just as we did . . . . . and proceeded to follow us and harass poor Abby and Keeper with nary a word from his owner. As we moved further and further down the lake, I kept looking back to see if the guy was interested that his dog was still with us but, apart from a barely audible whistle when I was mostly over the horizon, there was nothing, not even movement to catch up to us. And I wasn't walking back . . . .

So I took his dog.

Well, I took his dog down the lake and when it became apparent the kind of harassment above was going to eventually cause a couple of fights, I put Stray Dog on a leash.

That's when I thought: "I've got 45 minutes to an hour to get to where I'm going and then back . . . . so I can practice some Dog Whisperer stuff on this completely out-of-control dog."

So, from that moment on, it was a short leash for Stray Dog and trying to establish myself as the Alpha in his life which was starting to work by the time I returned this mutt to his disgruntled owner.

Stray Dog, now on a leash, watches intently as Abby climbs a cliff.

I did return Stray Dog to his disgruntled owner, who should be happy Stray Dog was on a leash when we were obviously in the immediate vicinity of a skunk on the trek back.

Ahh, yes, Rick, that could explain why you have snow on the ground and we don't! I'm jealous though, I can't wait till it finally just snows here and stays!

Beautiful Stray Dog that found you - he looks to be somesort of shepherd cross? Some owners. Unreal that this person allowed his dog to become the responsibilty of someone else. What was that guy doing?

Good for you for taking control of the situation...you must be great at multi tasking, you still got some great pictures!!

Unbelievable the guy did nothing while his dog harrassed Abby & Keeper and didn't try to retrieve his dog after he disappeared towards the other end of the lake some people

"Stray Dog" sure is a cutie though I'll bet Abby & Keeper were glad to leave him behind though
