Protruding anal gland or possible insect bite?

We're at the cottage and the black flies and mosquitoes are pretty fierce. Magic was outside for a pee in the grass. Shortly after she came inside she began scooting on the carpet. I checked her behind to see if it was her anal glands (she does need them expressed occasionally) or if it was a bite. There was a bite at the base of her tail, but I noticed her anal gland completely sticking out of her anus. It looked like a big pink marble.

Could that have been caused by an insect bite or could it be an infection or something? My husband is the one who expresses them and he has never seen them/it stick out like that before. He did manage to express it a bit but it's still sticking out. Magic is sleeping now so I don't think it's bothering her too much.

What happened Brenda? Was it serious? Did your dog have to be treated by a vet?

She's OK now. The gland had shrunk quite a bit last night and this morning it had gone back inside.
Must've been an insect bite?
