Smile Update on my GSD girl

An updated picture of out GSD girl Shadow. She is doing great, follows her schedule faithfully. She is growing up beautifully and fast, I must say.

Just thought of sharing her picture.

Before (at 7 weeks).... and after (14 weeks).

OMG.. Jelousy has officially set in! Im OBSESSED with GSDS.. And i want one, so so so so so bad! I couldnt have one before cause my mom is scared of dogs (shh, I didnt wanna say anything yet, but my mom is actually starting to talk about getting one, she wants to rescue, but of course she wants a pure bred, puppy Yup, good luck finding one of those in a NFLD spca.. haha) I can haz yours?

Yes, A prong collar is HARMLESS if used correctly, and im sure its been a gift from god for some people. I would rather use a prong then one of those slip, chain collar (Aka, Choke chain).. Safer IMO.

She's gorgeous

IMHO though, a 14-week old pup shouldn't need a prong collar. With proper training starting right now you should never have need of one. They can be used without causing harm to the dog, but only when there are actual problems to address. I think you could be training your puppy more than effectively on a flat collar at this point in time.

What a sweetheart.......They grow so fast....

As for the prong, it should never be used on a pup. Doesn't matter if it's used properly or not. Proper training is the key, especially at this age. I have raised GSD's and I must say this is the easiest breed to train and I have never had to use a prong....

My nephews GSD is 16 weeks..Cleo is walking great on a leash. And she is doing this on a flat collar.

NewGSDPUPOwner, please get rid of the prong and get a flat collar.

Yes, there are alot of items on the market that are considered inhumane. These are one of them.

Please find alternative options.

oh for pete's sake.

Ok people, this OP posted pics of his pup so we could see a gorgeous, happy puppy, not so people could jump all over his choice of collar.

I agree that GENERALLY a prong isn't used on pups, but IF the OP has been trained how to use it properly... The prong is not I repeat NOT inhumane if it is used PROPERLY. On that note, NewGSD, I can actually see that the collar is not correctly positioned on her neck...it should be high up, almost behind the ears. I'm guessing it's not fitted properly for her size. I would try a regular nylon collar for now and once she's grown, have the collar fitted properly by a trainer who can show you how to use it, IF you need to...not every dog needs a prong for training. Everyone is totally , including me. Getting off my soapbox now.

NOW, the important part here is, THANK YOU for posting those pics NewGSD, she's an absolute stunner! Her coat is nice and dark, it's going to be so fun seeing how it changes as she matures!!! Jaida's coat looked a lot like that at her age, but she ended up with a lot more tan up her legs, on her head and on her chest....

Maybe the poster does not know the effects that a prong collar will do? And I think you contridicked. You state that if used properly, it is not unhumane...then state that the collar is not positioned on her neck right, therefore..making it inhumane.

Put one of those around your neck and give it a little yank...

She is a beautiful puppy.

I am not bashing the owner and I am sure she loves her dog very much. I just think that a different collar should be used.

bendyfoot, I'm not jumping on the OP...We are here to educate right?...

I just don't know of any trainer using a prong on a pup..Not even in puppy classes. If Shadow is pulling(natural for a pup) then this can be corrected without a Prong..It can be corrected with a flat collar..I know this cause I have done this...I have also done this with my nieces pups who were pullers. And at five months they pulled like crazy...I never used a prong for them. They are 11 months and walk properly.

It boils down to time, patience and training..And like I said, this is a very easy breed to train. They are eager to learn..They are very smart...Why do you think the Police Force uses them....Mine is retired and my brothers partner is one.

NewGSDPUPOwner, please don't think I am jumping on you, I'm not......I'm just saying you don't need to use a prong on your GORGEOUS girl...

PLEASE post more pics.

Oh no,as was said we did not mean to jump on the op,I for one love GSD's and I think most people do and this little girl is gorgeous
So,new GSDpupowner,I hope you stick around,we'd love to see more updates of Shadow.
My neighbor tried to leash-train his Husky(Fate)with a prongcollar, she went in to a panic and just about choked herself:sad:
So no more prong-collar for her
