cat leaning to the right... tipping over
I have a barn cat who has always been healthy. Just today I noticed that he keeps tipping over to his right. He can't seem to walk in a straight line. His head is a little cocked to his right as well. Any thoughts as to what could cause this? We can't afford a whole battery of tests.

Ear infection, ruptured eardrum, if there is a problem with the ear it will be causing terrible pain for the cat and won't correct itself on its own, the cat need to have meds from a vet.

Definately a trip to the vet. Has this cat had it's rabies shots? Don't want to alarm you, but I've seen rabid animals stumble around like that as well.

If it were a dog I would suggest possibly vestibular disease but I don't know if it is the same thing for cats. One way or the other a vet should be consulted.
Hope it all turns out OK |

Sounds like an infection which affects the inner ear and destroys their balance. It might also be affecting his appetite because the inability to orientate in space makes them nauseous. He doesn't feel great, I can tell you.
Please take him to the vet. I'm sure it will cost you no more than the visit and the meds. The vet might ask to draw his blood and even though it's a good idea, you don't have to agree. Is there any possibility of bringing him inside for a week or so until the meds take hold and so you can monitor his eating? Cats cannot go for long without eating or their liver starts freaking out. The staggering will take some time to resolve but they do recover completely. Last edited by badger; March 30th, 2008 at 09:48 AM. |

Could be an inner ear problem or a tumor. This cat needs to see a vet ASAP.
Please keep us up to date.
