weird, circular, hairless patch on dog

Our 2 year old lab/retriever cross has a small, dime-sized, circular patch on his side with the hair missing. It is slightly raised, not red, and doesn't seem to be itchy. Don't know how long it has been there; it doesn't seem to bother him. We're planning to take him to the vet....but, any ideas on what it could be? Doesn't seem to fit the profile for ringworm from what I've read, but don't know what else it could be.

Hi

It could be that a particular area that your dog lies in has something sticking out,

could be the way he scratches....

could also be an insect; ie, mite, tic etc.
