Help with an adopted dog! (fleas)
Hello everyone,
I'm picking up a 3 yr old (won't know for sure till I get him checked out by the vet) Welsh Corgi/ Terrier mix from the shelter on Tuesday. When I was visiting him, I noticed that he had fleas. I don't want to bring him home with fleas because then I can avoid the home infestation part, but he is getting neutered on Monday. I was told that he cannot have a bath for at least one week after surgery, but I want to get as many live fleas, flea eggs, flea babies, off the dog as possible before I bring him home. Today is Sunday so the shelter, vet, and groomers are closed. I plan to call them all tomorrow. I don't know exactly what the shelter's process is when performing the surgery. I assume it only involves local shaving if necessary, and no baths. Do you have any advice on what my best options might be? Thanks! |

Some of the topical flea medications kill all life stages of the flea and should prevent an infestation of your house. Just make sure you use one that kills all life stages.
Your vet should be able to give you some ideas about the best product for your situation. If you have other pets, you'll need to treat them all. Best of luck with your new addition! Welcome to the board and I hope you'll have pictures to post soon!

if he is in a shelter or rescue should they not deal with the fleas? god you would think they would want to know so they could deal with the whole place not getting them? ask them to apply something for the fleas so you dont bring them home!
Thanks for considering a rescue!

The topical stuff works pretty quick. Your vet should have some available. We use Frontline Plus for ticks but it pretty much knocks fleas dead, too. If you pick some up from your vet and apply it as soon as you pick up your new dog, it should kill any fleas that jump off in the car or at home.

I got it from the Downey shelter
http://animalcare.lacounty.gov/AdoptSearch.asp I think they are just too busy? They only have a vet tech available for limited hours, and surgeries are only scheduled on limited days. |

Can you purchase what is needed and give it to the vet tech to apply for you? I cant imagine this place not dealing with fleas really? there whole place would end up having them? and anyone coming in could take them home? I would call them back and insist on it!

If it's just a topical application, I can do it myself. I don't know, I'll see if my vet has any better ideas.
The shelter is really crowded and full. They have 2-4 dogs in each kennel, and there are so few workers and volunteers, it was hard to get some assistance. I don't think they have the funds to treat a flea problem. I think I'll start volunteering there though, maybe I can help. Thanks~ |

Are you taking it to vet that is not located at the shelter? IF so you should tell your vet and they may want you to treat it prior to going? I cant imagine how hard it must be on these places? 4 dogs to a cage is a tough situation!! I am sure that any help you can give will be really appreciated! Let us know how you make out!

Umm.. the adoption fee includes a free examination from a "participating veterinarian." I don't live in their county/city, so I'm not sure if the vet I usually go to is part of that program. I'll probably get him checked out by a nearby vet, and then also stop by my own vet. I think they said they don't have a vet at the shelter, but I think I saw one nearby while driving there.

In our rescue we use Advantage multi, before the dogs arrive in their foster home. It's in a tube in a liquid form, that you just apply to the back of the neck. Within a few hours, fleas are usually falling off. I've had over a 100 dogs/puppies our home in the past 5years and some have had fleas. They have never infested my home, nor past in on to our dogs. I'm forgetting that Revolution works the same way and is a little cheaper.
Good luck with your new dog! |
