Small puppy Big Crate

Good Afternoon All,

Quick question, I use to have a Border Collie, we used a crate to train her, we are getting a Papillon puppy in a week or two, we wish to crate train her too. We would like to use the Border Collie crate, but were wondering how we can block the puppy to one side, like to make it smaller.

The only problem I am having with this is, how to divide it, it is a plastic airline registered one.

Please any suggestions?

maybe a piece of cardboard? that might work, i mean not like the dog will have to much weight behind her to knock it over, or you could go to a building store and get a piece of ply wood, but make sure it is secured! if it isnt properly secured it could fall on her and hurt her.

Hi! You are right to make the area smaller. Too big and the dog will potty in the crate. I have recommended to my clients, with complete success, a cardboard box. It limits the size of the crate and cannot hurt the puppy. Put it all the way to the back of the crate. You can keep using smaller boxes as the dog matures. Good luck with your puppy!

alot of crate manufacturers sell dividers for the crates now. you might want to check around to see if you can find one. I'd go w/ the cardboard box idea first, but if you want something washable, a top to a large rubbermaid storage container may fit nicely. being plastic, and durable, it'd be washable if there were any accidents.

I used laundry baskets to fill the section I dodnt want used...worked great.

I don't think I"d use anything cardboard. When Tazz was a baby he could chew his way through anything. He could find any peice of paper or carboard that had found a home on my floor and make a total disaster of it. Check around, someone must have a crate separater that they no longer require, for their pup.

I used a peice of peg board...easy to tie the "divider" on once it's in the crate because of all the holes, it's sturdy, light, and still provides some air circulation.

And it's cheap :-)
